THE PATER NOSTER


"Our Father" is the prayer of the faithful which Christ taught His Apostles when they asked Him how they should pray. The priest follows with a prayer for our deliverance and protection.
 
P:  Oremus.  Praeceptis           		P:  Let us pray.  Admonished 

salutaribus moniti,  et divina    		by salutary precepts,  and 

institutione formati,  audemus    		following divine directions,  

dicere:                           		we presume to say:

                                  
P:  Pater noster,  qui es in      		P:  Our Father,  Who art in 

coelis:  sanctificetur nomen      		heaven, hallowed be Thy name;  

tuum:  adveniat regnum tuum:      	Thy kingdom come;  Thy will be 

fiat voluntas tua sicut in        		done on earth as it is in

coelo et in terra.  Panem         		heaven; give us this day our 

nostrum quotidianum da nobis      	daily bread;  and forgive us

THE FRACTIO PANIS (Breaking of the bread)


The bread Jesus used at the last supper was flat and unleavened. At that time it was custom for the head of household to break the bread into individual portions at meals, particularly during ceremonies as a sign of his love for them and of unity within his house.


•The priest breaks the Sacred Host,  saying:             

P:  Per eumdem Dominum nostrum    	P:  Through the same Jesus 

Jesum Christum Filium tuum.       	Christ, Thy Son,  our Lord,  

Qui tecum vivit et regnat in      		Who liveth and reigneth with 

unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus.     		Thee in the unity of the Holy 

Per omnia saecula saeculorum.     	Ghost,  God, World without 

                                  		end.

S:  Amen.                         		S: Amen.

P:  Pax `´ Domini sit `´        		P: May the peace `´ of the 

 semper vobiscum `´.             		Lord `´ be always with `´

S:  Et cum spiritu tuo.           		S: And with thy spirit.

                                  
•The priest drops a particle of the Sacred Host into the  Chalice.                          

P:  Haec commixtio et             		P:  May this commingling and 

consecratio Corporis at           		consecrating of the Body and 

Sanguinis Domini nostri Jesu      	Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ 

Christi fiat accipientibus        		avail us who receive it unto 

nobis in vitam aeternam.  Amen.   	life everlasting.  Amen.
 
THE AGNUS DEI 

Throughout both Testaments of the Bible our Lord is referred to in prophecy and in fact as the "Lamb of God". Before the New and Everlasting Covenant, lambs were used for sacrificial offerings. As humans would sacrifice lambs, God graciously gave us His only Son as a sacrifice for our redemption. 

Three prayers follow the Agnus Dei, the last is based on the Roman centurion's plea for Christ to heal his ill servant.

•Bowing down,  the priest says:                             

P:  Agnus Dei,  qui tollis        		P:  Lamb of God,  Who takest 

peccata mundi,  miserere          		away the sins of the world:  

nobis.  Agnus Dei,  qui tollis    		have mercy on us.  Lamb of 

peccata mundi,  miserere          		God,  Who takest away the sins 

nobis.  Agnus Dei,  qui tollis    		of the world:  have mercy on 

peccata mundi,  dona nobis        	us.  Lamb of God,  Who takest 

pacem.                            		away the sins of the world:  

                                  		grant us peace.

                                  

P:  Domine Jesu Christe,  qui     		P:  O Lord Jesus Christ Who 

dixisti Apostolis tuis:  pacem    		didst say to Thine apostles:  

relinquo vobis,  pacem meam do    	Peace I leave you,  My peace I 

vobis:  ne respicias peccata      		give you:  look not uon my 

mea,  sed fidem Ecclesiae         		sins, but upon the faith of 

tuae;  eamque secundum            	Thy Church,  and vouchsafe to

P:  Perceptio Corporis tui,       		P:  Let not the partaking of 

Domine Jesu Christe,  quod ego    	Thy Body,  O Lord Jesus 

indignus sumere praesumo,  non    	Christ, which I,  all 

mihi proveniat in judicium et     		unworthy, presume to receive,  

condemnationem:  sed pro tua      	turn to my judgement and 

pietate prosit mihi ad            		condemnation; but through Thy

AT THE COMMUNION                  

•The priest genuflects, rises and says:                   

                                  
P:  Panem coelestem accipiam     	P:  I will take the bread of 

et nomen Domini invocabo.         	heaven,  and will call upon 

                                  		the name of the Lord.

                                  
•Taking the Sacred Host with his left hand,  the priest strikes his breast 
three times, saying (here the bell is rung each of the three times with the 
priest):           

                                  
P:  Domine,  non sum dignus ut    	P:  Lord,  I am not worthy 

intres sub tectum meum:  sed      	that Thou shouldst enter under 

tantum dic verbo,  et             		my roof;  but only say the 

sanabitur anima mea (three        		word, and my soul shall be
