THE OFFERTORY

The priest reads the prayer offering the unconsecrated bread and wine (offertory) to God for the Mass. He then asks to Lord to please accept (suscipe) our offering despite our unworthiness, for all Christians - living or dead.

Long ago, worshipers  would proceed to the altar bringing gifts of food, gold and other property.

The unleavened bread is specially prepared and the wine (red or white) is fermented purely and naturally. With a prayer, it is mixed with a small amount of water as Christ did at the last supper. His blood also came forth mixed with water when He died on the cross.

To keep out dust, the chalice is cleaned before and covered after pouring the water and wine into it while reciting a prayer.

P:  Oremus.                       		P: Let us pray.

•The priest now says the Offertory for the Mass being  offered.  He then 
uncovers the Chalice and in a lower voice says:                             

THE OFFERING OF THE HOST          

P:  Suscipe sancte Pater          		P:  Receive,  O Holy Father, 

omnipotens aeterne Deus,  hanc    	almighty and eternal God,  

immaculatam hostiam,  quam ego    	this spotless host,  which I,  

indignus famulus tuus offero      		Thine unworthy servant,  offer 

tibi Deo meo vivo et vero,        		unto Thee,  my living and true 

pro innumerabilibus peccatis      		God, for my countless sins, 

et offensionibus et               		trespasses,  and omissions; 

negligentiis meis,  et pro        		likewise for all here present, 

omnibus circumstantibus,  sed     	and for all faithful 

et pro omnibus fidelibus          		Christians,  whether living or 

Christianis vivis atque           		dead,  that it may avail both 

defunctis:  ut mihi et illis      		me and them to salvation,  

proficiat ad salutem in vitam     		unto life everlasting.  Amen.

•The priest goes to the Epistle side and pours wine and water into the Chalice.       

P:  Deus,  qui humanae            		P:  O God,  Who in creating 

substantiae dignitatem            		man didst exalt his nature 

mirabiliter condidisti,  et       		very wonderfully and yet more 

mirabilius reformasti:  da        		wonderfully didst establish it 

nobis per hujus aquae et vini     		anew:  by the mystery 

mysterium,  ejus divinitatis      		signified in the mingling of 

esse consortes,  qui              		this water and wine,  grant us 

humanitatis nostrae fieri         		to have part in the Godhead of 

dignatus est particeps,  Jesus    		Him Who hath vouchsafed to 

Christus,  Filius tuus,           		share our manhood,  Jesus 

Dominus nosteS:  Qui tecum        	Christ,  Thy Son,  Our Lord,  

vivit et regnat in unitate        		Who liveth and reigneth with 

Spiritus Sancti,  Deus;  per      		Thee in the unity of the Holy 

omnia saecula saeculorum.         	Ghost,  God;  world without

OFFERING OF THE CHALICE           

•At the middle of the altar, the priest says:                  

P:  Offerimus tibi Domine,        		P:  We offer unto Thee,  O 

calicem salutaris,  tuam          		Lord, the chalice of 

deprecantes clementiam:  ut in    	salvation, beseeching Thy 

conspectu divinae majestatis      		clemency that it may ascend as 

tuae,  pro nostra et totius       		a sweet odor before Thy divine 

mundi salute cum odore            		majesty,  for our own 

suavitatis ascendat.  Amen.       		salvation,  and for that of 

                                  		the whole world.  Amen.

                                  
P:  In spiritu humilitatis,       		P:  Humbled in mind,  and 

et in animo contrito              		contrite of heart,  may we 

suscipiamur a te Domine:  et      		find favor with Thee,  O Lord;  

sic fiat sacrificium nostrum      		and may the sacrifice we this 

in conspectu tuo hodie,  ut       		day offer up be well pleasing 

placeat tibi Domine Deus.         		to Thee, Who art our Lord and 

                                  		our God.

P:  Veni sanctificator            		P:  Come,  Thou,  the 

omnipotens aeterne Deus,  et      	Sanctifier, God,  almighty and 

`†´ benedic hoc sacrificium       		everlasting: bless `†´ this 

tuo sancto nomini praeparatum.    	sacrifice which is prepared 

                                  		for the glory of Thy holy 

                                  		name.
