Recently, Bishop Fred Henry ordered the FSSP in his diocese to cease saying the Mass because they refused to give Communion in the hand. (Read the AQ thread on that here.)
Yesterday the bishop lifted the ban on Communion on the tongue and this morning CBC Radio in Calgary interviewed Bp. Fred Henry. The interview is available on the CBC website at this link. Here are a two excerpts from the interview:
Interviewer: Does the timing of the lifting of the restrictions this week have anything to do with the parishioners of St. Anthony's going public with their complaints?
Bp. Henry: Oh absolutely not. If it did I would have done the exact opposite as a matter of saying to them that there's still some catechetical needs that must be addressed within that particular community with respect to an understanding of the distinction between what they are celebrating is the extraordinary form as opposed to the ordinary form of the liturgical celebration. Some of them seem to think that it is the ordinary form and it's not: it's extraordinary and it's there by way of a special motu proprio of the Holy Father. Furthermore, some of them seemingly don't understand, including [the board chairman of the Latin Mass community] whom you quoted recently, what the authority of a bishop is within the context of an emergency or pandemic situation regarding the liturgy. The bishop is the chief liturgist in the diocese.
. . . . .
Interviewer: Do you believe you have the authority to still suspend the Mass?
Bp. Henry: Oh yes! In a pandemic situation, of course!
. . . . .
Interviewer: And so that means that you have, as [the board chairman of the Latin Mass community] would put it, the ability to overrule the Pope's directives and cancel Latin Mass?
Bp. Henry: That's right.
Clearly, while the folks of Calgary have the Mass again for now, this case isn't closed. If anyone has an email address or phone number of someone in Ecclesia Dei or the Congregation for Divine Worship, please email me at liberal-bishops-patrol@sea-cat.info so I can forward on the info I'm collecting on this issue.

| Thanks for posting the info and the links. As a Catholic living within the Calgary Diocese, it is definitely food for thought. The NO here is somewhat of a liturgical wasteland and it sounds like the bishop has it in for the Latin Mass community at St. Anthony's. The local SSPX chapel is looking more appealing by the day! |

There is no doubt that his "bishop" heard a thing or two from Rome |

I'm sure those who criticized the Econe consecrations in 1988 will criticize Bishop Henry.
And if that's the case, then I have some ocean side property in Nevada to sell as well. |

Actually, they are. They just don't hang out here so you're not going to see evidence of it on AQ. |

Does this mean he is not in communion with the pope, if he overrules him? |
