SSPX gives Bishop Williamson until the end of the month to recant or be
expelled from the society
Translated from a report in German at kath.net

MAINZ, February 18 - A representative of the Society of St. Pius X
(SSPX) has announced that Holocaust denier Richard Williamson could be
expelled from the priestly fraternity unless he withdraws his statements
on the Holocaust by the end of February.
Fr. Matthias Gaudron said in a program on ZDF German Television that the
SSPX has given the English-born bishop until the end of February to make
his retraction.
"As traditional Catholics, we have no reason to downplay Hitler's crimes
or in any way to describe the Nazi regime as any less horrible than it
was," Fr. Gaudron said, adding that "Fr. Williamson has caused great
harm to our society" [by his statements on the Holocaust].

Please note that the reporter does not provide a direct quote from Fr. Gaudron that Bishop Williamson must recant or be expelled. If there was a clear quote saying as much, he would have provided it.
This reporter is just trying to create a sensational story. |

True enough. But isn't it equally true that, as traditional Catholics, we have no reason to overplay Hitler's crimes or in any way to describe the Nazi regime as any more horrible than it was? I can't imagine that Bishop Fellay authorized Fr. Gaudron to opine on the subject, and certainly not to do so on behalf of the Society.
As I have expressed repeatedly, the historical fact of the Nazis' brutality is no more or less of a concern for Catholics than countless other horrific episodes in history. We know that very, very bad things happened during Hitler's regime. Quibbling over specific numbers and methods of execution is a waste of time, IMHO. |
