Pelosi Backs Obama on Repeal of Defense of Marriage Act

Friday, August 01, 2008
By Josiah Ryan, Staff Writer

On the Spot (CNSNews.com) – If Barack Obama is elected president, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will support him in fulfilling his vow to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which currently protects states from having to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in other states as they ordinarily would be required to do by the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the Constitution.

“Yes,” Pelosi said Thursday at a press conference, when CNSNews.com asked if she would support Obama’s policy. Hear Audio

The DOMA defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman for purposes of all federal laws. Signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, the DOMA protects states from having to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in other states.

Ordinarily, under the "Full Faith and Credit Clause" of the Constitution, states are required to recognize "the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State."

The “pride” section of the Obama campaign Web site reads: "Obama also believes we need to fully repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions.”

In July 1996, DOMA passed the Republican-controlled House by a margin of 342 to 67. Pelosi voted against the bill along with 64 other Democrats.

On Thursday, Pelosi did not elaborate on her statement and her office declined to give CNSNews.com further explanation of her position.

CNSNews.com also asked members of the Senate leadership, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), if they would support Obama in repealing DOMA. But both senators said they did not have a definitive position on the issue yet.

“I don’t know,” said Schumer. “We have to see what kind of legislation is introduced.”

“I want to take a look at it, I haven’t made a decision, I haven’t even thought about it,” said Durbin. “But I will look at his decision.”

Schumer and Durbin voted for DOMA in 1996 as members of the House.

The bill passed the Senate on Sept. 10, 1996 by a margin of 85 to14.

Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also voted in favor of DOMA as a senator in 1996.

IN NAME ONLY! I HAVE TRIED TO BE CHARITABLE BUT HER ACTIONS PREVENT IT. IMO HER ACTIONS HAVE PLACED HER OUTSIDE THE BOUNDS OF HOLY MOTHER CHURCH AND HER BISHOP NEEDS TO DISCIPLINE THE POOR SOUL. SHE, WHO BOASTS THAT SHE IS "TRYING TO SAVE THE PLANET" WOULD VOTE AGAINST LAWS TO PROTECT THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY. MEANWHILE THE FSSPX AND OTHER INDEPENDENT TRADITIONAL CATHOLIC GROUPS ARE CONSIDERED NOT IN "FULL COMMUNION" WITH THE HOLY SEE?. IT BOGGLES THE MIND! THIS IS THE DICHOTOMY WE ARE FACED WITH IN THE "SPIRIT OF VATICAN II". ONCE MORE THE NERO COMPLEX COMES INTO FULL OPERATION. MAY ST. STEPHEN, POPE AND MARTYR, WHO SHED HIS BLOOD FOR THE FAITH, INTERCEDE FOR US.

Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, retired archbishop of Washington, said he has known Pelosi in his role as a member of the bishops' Committee on International Policy since she first came to Washington. He said he's always found her to be "a very thoughtful and committed defender of human rights."

I can be more charitable towards Obama since he is not a Catholic or Christian (I don't care what he says, his church is not a Christian church) His soul is just as much in jeopardy as Pelosi's but Pelosi is causing scandal to other Catholics by her actions and words. Even in worse peril is her priests and Bishops who refuse to discipline her.

I'm not sure what this woman is anymore. She is conducting herself like a godless heathen.

I lived in SF for 20 years and saw first-hand the antics of Pelosi and Boxer and their followers. Believe me, the only diety they believe in is themselves.

50% of Catholics will vote for Obama. What does that make them?

it is frustrating to have folks so delusional leading this country

Pelosi is to be pitied

She actually believes she is "saving the planet".

you can't reason with someone who is this crazy

just pray for her

even the early Christians prayed for Nero and Caligula........at least that these leaders be impeded from the evil they would wish to do

"May God rebuke them"

A BAD catholic such as Pelosi will suffer greater torments in HELL due to the fact that whom much is given much must be expected, meanwhile that ignorant native on the desert island (How did he get on that island did he grow from the sand or did his people deny GOD's revelation at one point and lost it for their tribe) will lose the beatific vision and suffer little due to violation of the natural law, which is inscribed on every human from day 1 till CHRIST'S return!

Not Catholics, that's for sure unless the intent to vote for him was formed through some sort of excusable ignorance (I can't think what).

sadly, many catholics here in texas will vote for b. Hussein obama

these are the same catholics who voted for clinton 1 and would have put clinton 2 in the oval-o

the wisdom of catholics is highly overrated when it comes to 'voting' per se

many catholics voted for the dissolution of the french monarchy for that oh so enlightened democracy, which today they labor in slavery at a 70% tax-rate

only an extreme few vote with integrity or wisdom

the tyranny of the ignorant (Orc) is upon us.
