I received this "profound" lesson from a secular friend. I'd almost bet that it's stolen from the Church and that they eliminated God from the top. Can anyone direct me to where this came from? Scripture, Saint etc? I'd like to teach a lesson to my secular friend.

It's in Spanish, so I'll have to translate. those that understand Spanish can get to work right away.

Thanks for the assistance.

the translation:

A professor of Philosophy in front of his class of students, without saying anything, grabbed a large glass vase, and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the vase was full. The students all answered, yes.

The professor then took out a large box of BB's’s (bird shot) and filled the vase with BB's’s, which filled the voids between the golf balls.

The professor then asked again, is the vase full? And the students answered again, yes.

Then professor emptied a box of sand into the vase which further filled the voids left by the BB's’s. The students once again all said that it was full.

Then the professor emptied two beers into the vase, and the students all laughed.

When the laughter died down the professor said:

I want all of you to take note that the vase represents life. The golf balls represent the important things in life, like family, our children, health, friends, love, things for which we have a passion. These are things that if we were to loose all else, our lives would be full.

The BB’s are the other things that we care about, that are important to us, like work, our house, and our car…..

The sand is the rest of the small stuff. If we first put in the sand in the vase, there would be no room for the BB’s, nor for the golf balls. The same occurs in life. If we use all our time and energy in the small things, we would never have time for the things of life that are truly important.

Pay attention to the things that are crucial for your happiness. Play with your children, leave yourself time to go to the doctor, go out to dinner with your spouse, practice your favorite sport, your favorite pastime. There will always be time to clean the house, and to repair the faucet. Occupy yourself first with the golf balls, of the things that are truly important. Establish your priorities, the rest is just sand.

Now, one of the students raised his hand and asked, what does the beer represent? The professor smiled and answered:

The beer was to demonstrate that even if your life is full, there is always room to have a couple of drinks with a friend.

Did Brownjul tell a story like that only it didn't use beer, it was some other liquid?

Just a shot in the dark, but you might check.

The story is definately familiar. I've definately read it before but the objects used were different.

I've received that one via e-mail many times over the years. Never know where any of these stories originate.

It's a good analogy.

I just Googled the words "The rest is just sand", and came up with these sites:

http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/inspirational-stories/148-set-your-priorities-rest-just-sand.html

http://www.justadvance.com/anecdotes_rockspebbles.html

http://www.authorsden.com/categories/story_top.asp?catid=35&id=17493

And there's loads more!

Clare.
