O Ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, health of the sick, refuge of sinners,
comfort of the afflicted, thou knoweth my needs, troubles and sufferings.
Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy.
By appearing in the grotto of Lourdes thou wast pleased to make it a
privileged sanctuary from which thou dispenseth thy favors.
Already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both corporal and spiritual.

I come therefore, with unbounded confidence, to implore thy maternal intercession.
Obtain, O Loving Mother, the granting of my requests…..

St. Blaise Novena January 25th – February 2nd

Novena to St. Blaise
http://www.moodycatholic.com/images/st_blase.jpg

Say once a day for 9 days, especially beginning on 25 January and ending on 2 February, the eve of the Feast of St. Blaise.

O Almighty and eternal God! With lively faith and reverently worshiping Thy divine Majesty, I prostrate myself before Thee and invoke with filial trust Thy supreme bounty and mercy. Illumine the darkness of my intellect with a ray of Thy heavenly light and inflame my heart with the fire of Thy divine love, that I may contemplate the great virtues and merits of the saint in whose honor I make this novena, and following his example imitate, like him, the life of Thy divine Son.

A prayer for our new President

Image result for washington prayingO Heavenly Father, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life, move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President, to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all those entrusted to their care. Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn, whose lives are threatened with extermination by an indifferent society. Guide all public officials by Thy wisdom and grace to cease supporting any law that fails to protect the fundamental good that is human life itself, which is a gift from God and parents. O Thou who art the Protector and Defender of the lives of the innocent unborn, change the hearts of those who compromise the call to protect and defend life. Bring our nation back to the values that have made us a great nation, a society that upholds the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. O Mary, Mother of God, Mother of the living, help us to bear witness to the Gospel of Life with our lives and our laws, through Christ, thy Son, Our Lord. Amen.

Novena to Saint Agnes Jan 12th – Jan 20th

O glorious Saint Agnes, by the living faith which animated thee from thy tender years and rendered thee so pleasing to God that thou didst merit a martyr’s crown:  obtain for us the grace to keep our holy faith pure within us and to profess ourselves Christians in both word and work.  May our open confession of Jesus before men cause Him to bear a favorable witness to us before His eternal Father.

O invincible Martyr, Saint Agnes, by thy confidence in God’s help, when being condemned by the Roman prefect to see the lily of thy purity stained and trampled in the mud, thou didst not despair, still trusting firmly in God.  We beseech thee by thine intercession to obtain for us from Almighty God the forgiveness of our sins and sure confidence that He will bestow upon us life everlasting and the means necessary to merit it.

http://www.bookdrum.com/images/books/40127_m.jpg

Most Bountiful God, I sincerely and humbly thank Thee for all of Thy many benefits to me during the past year, and for the privilege of beginning a new year.  Do Thou mercifully continue Thy gracious help and protection, so that I may not only spend this coming year in Thy service, but also may increase from day to day in fervor and in the performance of good works.  May all my thoughts, words and actions be for Thy greater honor and glory, for my own sanctification and for the good of souls.  These favors I ask from Thy goodness through the merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who for our salvation first shed His Precious Blood on this day.      +Amen

Novena to Saint John the Evangelist Dec 18th – Dec 26th

Grandes Heures Anne de Bretagne Saint Jean.jpg

O glorious Apostle, who, on account of thy virginal purity, wast so beloved by Jesus as to deserve to lay thy head upon His divine breast, and to be left, in His place, as son to His most holy Mother: I beg thee to inflame me with a most ardent love toward Jesus and Mary. Obtain for me from our Lord that I, too, with a heart purified from earthly afflictions, may be made worthy to be ever united to Jesus as a faithful disciple, and to Mary as a devoted son, both here on earth and eternally in heaven. Amen.

Miraculous Medal Novena Nov 18 – Nov 26

Miraculous Medal Novena Nov 18-26

Image result for Miraculous Mother

O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord Jesus and our Mother,
penetrated with the most lively confidence in thine all-powerful and never-failing intercession,
manifested so often through the Miraculous Medal,
we thy loving and trustful children, implore Thee to obtain for us
the graces and favors we ask during this Novena,
if they be beneficial to our immortal souls, and the souls for whom we pray.

[Here privately form your petitions.]

Thou knowest, O Mary, how often our souls have been the sanctuaries of thy Son, Who hates iniquity.
Obtain for us then a deep hatred of sin and that purity of heart
which will attach us to God alone so that our every thought,
word and deed may tend to His greater glory.
Obtain for us also a spirit of prayer and self-denial
that we may recover by penance what we have lost by sin
and at length attain to that blessed abode where thou art the Queen of Angels and of men. Amen.

Novena for the Feast of the Assumption August 6th – 14th

Novena for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary, Help of Christians

The First Day
Mary’s Death was without Pain
Preparatory Prayer

O MARY, Virgin most blessed and Mother of Our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ, through thy mercy I beseech thee to come to my aid, and to inspire me with such confidence in thy power, that I may have recourse to thee, pray to thee, and implore thy aid in all needs of soul and body.
Meditation

Mary, the virgin Mother of God, was conceived without original sin. She never dimmed the luster of sanctifying grace which beautified her soul by actual sin. Nevertheless she had to pass through the dark portal of death before she was assumed, body and soul, into heaven. She had not been endowed with the privilege of immortality with which God had invested our first parents in paradise. It was meet that she should be like unto her divine Son in everything, even in death. But as she had drained the bitter cup of suffering during her whole life, and especially when standing beneath the cross, her death was to be free from pain and suffering. She quietly passed away yielding up her spirit in a yearning desire to be united forever with her divine Son in heaven.

Run for your lives! It’s here, it’s now- it’s the 2015
ATTACK OF THE KILLER FISHIES!!!!

(DUM-DUM_DUMMM!!)

The time has come to droop and die
You walk in your house and want to fly
But you gotta sit down and I’ll tell you why-
Yo mama’s churned up a nasty fish fry.

Those forty days of grace and cod breath are here. If you’ll remember my Lenten thread from last year, I went to a great effort to avoid posting any recipe that reeked of the sea. Anybody want me to repost my two Gruel doozies? (cue the cricket chorus)

A Farewell to Alleluia

Father Francis X. Weiser, S.J. describes the traditions related to ceasing using Alleluia during Lent.

Alleluia, or hallelujah, is one of the few Hebrew words adopted by the Christian Church from apostolic times. It means “Praise the Lord!”

On Saturday before Septuagesima Sunday this ancient and hallowed exclamation of joy and praise in the Christian liturgy is officially discontinued in the Western Church to signify the approach of the solemn season of Lent. According to the regulation of Pope Alexander II (1073) the Alleluia is sung twice after the prayers of the Divine Office, and not heard again till the solemn vigil service of Easter, when it once more is used as a glorious proclamation of Easter joy. The Greek Church, however, still retains the Alleluia even in Lent.
