Catholic League On Predatory Priests: It’s Not Rape If The Child Isn’t Penetrated

[Tell that to those who were “groped or otherwise abused” – it’s still sexual assault! – AQ Tom]

Catholic League president Bill Donohue defends predatory priests by claiming it’s not rape if the child isn’t penetrated.

In a bizarre, insensitive, and outrageous post, Bill Donohue, president of the very conservative Catholic League, attacked the recent grand jury report documenting the rape and sexual abuse of over a 1,000 children by hundreds of Catholic priests in  Pennsylvania.

Donohue called the report released by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court an “obscene lie” while defending the Catholic Church and their deplorable record of covering up and enabling the rape and sexual abuse of children by predatory priests.

In his post titled “Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report Debunked,” Donohue desperately tries to minimize the findings of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and in so doing Donohue reveals the profound poverty of both his intellect and his character.

At one point in the deplorable post Donohue has the audacity to claim that the statement “the priests raped their victims” is actually a “myth,” writing:

Myth: The priests “raped” their victims.

Attempting to justify his assertion that the claim that “the priests raped their victims” is a “myth,” Donohue writes:

Fact: This is an obscene lie. Most of the alleged victims were not raped: they were groped or otherwise abused, but not penetrated, which is what the word “rape” means.

In a fleeting moment of self-awareness the rabid defender of all things Catholic continues:

This is not a defense — it is meant to set the record straight and debunk the worst case scenarios attributed to the offenders.

Donohue is being dishonest. He is defending predatory priests. When he claims it’s not rape if the child isn’t penetrated, he is attempting to minimize the horrific crimes of predatory priests, and in so doing he is defending those predatory priests. Full stop.

Donohue also denies that the Catholic Church uses a “playbook” for concealing the truth about predatory priests:

Again, Donohue is being dishonest. The fact that the Catholic Church received legal advice about how to set up the playbook only confirms the fact that the playbook does indeed exist.

Commenting on Donohue’s post, Joe. My. God. notes:

Donohue goes on to denounce the media for using the term “pedophilia” to describe the incidents when, Donohue claims, most of the victims were “postpubescent.”

And, as he always does, Donohue rants that the media is providing cover for the LGBT movement by not describing the assailants as “gay priests” and by sensationalizing the “minority” of cases involving preteen girls.

Donohue frequently tries to minimize and excuse the behavior of predatory priests by pointing out that some victims are “post-pubescent,” as if raping or sexually assaulting a 13-year-old is more acceptable than raping or sexually assaulting a 9-year-old.

Donohue also has the habit of blaming “the gays” for the moral corruption of the Catholic Church. It is all part of his pattern of trying to excuse and minimize the deplorable and criminal behavior of predatory priests, and the the deplorable and criminal behavior of Catholic leadership that covers-up for and enables the predatory priests.

Bottom line: Catholic League president Bill Donohue defends predatory priests by claiming it’s not rape if the child isn’t penetrated.

  1. Michael Stone and other liberals say:

Bill Donohue, president of the very conservative Catholic League [emphasis added – AQ Tom]

If so, then why did he tweet the following on August 17th?

It is interesting to note that the most irrational, indeed hysterical, reaction to PA grand jury report is coming from conservative Catholics. They are singularly incapable of making a cogent argument, so all they do is vent like little boys. They are a pitiful lot.

He’s a lackey for the USCCCP!

    • From the People-who-live-in-glasshouses-shouldn’t-throw-stones Dept.:

A followup tweet from Bill on the same date:

The lunatics have escaped the asylum and are ranting over my statements. I don’t reply to anyone who just vents.

  2. Donohue gets paid,so much for delivering so little ! He is an embarrassment! He needs to go and resign with the pope, and the bishops!

  3. Donahue is the definition of a neo-Catholic. I’ve never been a fan of his. He makes big bucks defending the indefensible. Novus Ordo Catholics who think like Donahue are part of the problem

  4. NO Kathlyx personae range from the utterly useless to the downright lethal, such as the Weigels, “Fr.” Martins and the eerily Elmer Fudd-like Habemus Pampas, Don Bergoglione – Godfather of the Lavender Lounge Lizard clan in the Motel 6. Fortunately, the first group constitutes the overwhelming majority.

A social media friend with extensive professional media contacts mentioned only hours ago that many wealthy CL donors are trying to get onto Wuerl’s cocktail party “A List.” The friend posted that they better hurry up since the Abp., according to other sources, is already a Las Vegas long shot to last beyond Labor Day.

  5. Obviously, when the ex-Prince of P’burg and Tiny Tim finally do go splat!, CL’s humongously off-putting kingpin will have some ‘splainin’ to do. Heh, heh… 😎

  6. He had a senior moment perhaps. Bill is not the most diplomatic bomb thrower in Catholic media.

However, from a legal and clinical point of view, if, say, 500 of the reported one thousand victims were not raped but groped or fondled, then Pennsylvania’s non-Christian AG’s grandstanding about a thousand children being “raped” by Catholic priests was an exaggeration perhaps in a moment of anti-Catholic zeal and giddiness. The error in arithmetic does not make the scandal any less disgusting, grotesque, or gravely immoral.

The pervs must be removed from the priesthood. But the anti-Catholic liberals jumping on this ride to get some punches in at the Church because of its pro-life and anti-same-sex-marriage stands, are not interested in going after NAMBLA. There is more than a little hypocrisy in the anti-Catholic liberals’ grandstanding over this issue. They are not interested in investigating homosexual pederasty anywhere other than in the Catholic Church. Moreover, they are not interested at all in a story about homosexual infiltration of the Catholic Church (which is what this is all about).

  7. “Catholic League president Bill Donohue defends predatory priests by claiming it’s not rape if the child isn’t penetrated..” Um, ah. er, what was that about a millstone about around their necks?. Egads, Bill, get straight before it’s too late.

  8. Lord Save the Church From Such Defenders

Posted on Monday, August 20, AD 2018 by Donald R. McClarey

“It is interesting to note that the most irrational, indeed hysterical, reaction to PA grand jury report is coming from conservative Catholics,” the Catholic League tweeted Friday from its account. “They are singularly incapable of making a cogent argument, so all they do is vent like little boys. They are a pitiful lot.”

Bill Donohue took time from counting his pay of half a million bucks a year to run The Catholic League to make the above noxious tweet. Cardinal Wuerl’s pet bulldog has an over the top attack on the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report that has to be read to be believed. Go here to read it.

Becket Adams at The Washington Examiner says it all:

The report reveals an institutionalized horror within the Church in the United States. It’s real and it’s terrible.

Not so, says Donohue, whose job is running a nonprofit that raises money off of outrage and pays Donohue roughly half a million dollars a year. It’s a liberal conspiracy!

“There are many vicious critics of the Catholic Church who would like to weaken its moral authority, and will seize on any problem it has to discredit its voice. Why? They hate its teachings on sexuality, marriage, and the family,” he writes in a “rebuttal” piece titled, “Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report Debunked.”

He lays out several points that he claims “debunk” the report, including that, by his own calculations, only 150 priests are guilty of abusing children. Well, that’s a relief.

Another “debunk”: One of the accused priests, George Zirwas, molested only teenagers, not children.

First, this isn’t even true. Diocesan documents show one Father Garbin met with “a little boy and his family about an ‘incident of inappropriate touch’ by Zirwas at St. Joseph the Worker parish.”

Second, what an absurd defense! These priests didn’t molest children. They molested adolescents. We’re not monsters, you know.

The rest of his “rebuttal” of a mishmash of whataboutism aimed at mitigating the damage from the report. He complains that sexual abuse is likely worse in public schools. He complains certain Pennsylvania officials have never sought to “shame imams, ministers, or rabbis.” He complains newsrooms keep using the word “rape,” when not all of the alleged and confirmed abuse involved penetration. It’s all whitewashing and handwaving.

Remember: This is his defense of the Catholic Church in the U.S.

Donohue’s response serves only to argue that things are likely worse elsewhere, and that the grand jury report is unfair. He doesn’t even attempt to argue Pennsylvanian Catholics haven’t suffered grave evil.

I’m not in the business of running damage control for unaccountable monsters, but a word of advice: When an organization is accused of a widespread conspiracy of abuse against children, avoid counter criticisms involving references to “little boys.”

This Catholic League response is a disgrace. Donohue is a disgrace. He is the Catholic version of a Tea Party scam-PAC. He exists to separate credulous Catholics from their hard-earned money.
