Louisville archdiocese won’t answer questions about Fr. Shayne Duvall

[The likes of him used to be sent to “take the cure” at Catholic counseling centers for priests and religious with alcohol or sex problems (such as the St. Luke Institute in Maryland, which charges dioceses up to $10,000 per month for treatment and whose last priest-president was removed for embezzlement and “inappropriate adult relationships”); now they are sent to less expensive, “Club Fed” style monasteries or retreat centers to “reflect on their spiritual condition” (as was Cardinal Coccopalmerio’ secretary after being busted for drug-running, coke-snorting and a sodomite orgy in His Eminence’s Vatican apartment)! – AQ Tom]

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ChurchMilitant.com) – A priest in Kentucky was sent on retreat for several weeks after admitting to an inappropriate relationship, and some parishioners claim the diocese is deliberately misleading them about the circumstances.

Father Shayne Duvall is a priest in the archdiocese of Louisville and the pastor of St. Raphael the Archangel Parish. Earlier this year, he was accused of having engaged in a sexual relationship with an adult. Reportedly, Fr. Duvall showed contrition for his behavior to Louisville’s Abp. Joseph E. Kurtz.

In May, the archdiocese sent Fr. Duvall away from his parish on retreat for a few weeks. Father Duvall remains pastor at St. Raphael.

Sources in Louisville claim that Fr. Duvall’s inappropriate relationship was with a man who was considering entering seminary. A contact told Church Militant that he learned this from several people close to the matter. He commented, “Each piece of this is disturbing.”

He claimed that the man who had a relationship with Fr. Duvall went on to enter seminary, only to leave formation during his first semester — but Church Militant was unable to confirm this.

The archdiocese told parishioners back in May that the inappropriate relationship had ended, but did not say with whom Fr. Duvall was having the relationship.

An email to St. Raphael parishioners at the time stated, “Father Shayne has fully cooperated with Archbishop Kurtz in addressing this situation over the past months.”

“Father Shayne has apologized and hopes to continue as pastor,” the email continued.

In response to Church Militant’s query, a spokesperson for the archdiocese shared a statement with Church Militant on July 25:

In May of this year, the archdiocesan Vicar for Priests (Father Jeff Shooner) informed the parishioners of Saint Raphael Parish that the pastor, Father Shayne Duvall, had been involved in an inappropriate relationship with an adult. Father Jeff told parishioners that the relationship had ended and Father Shayne had fully cooperated with Archbishop Kurtz in addressing this situation over the past months.

Father Shayne Duvall remains pastor of Saint Raphael Parish.

Church Militant asked the archdiocese several times whether the person with whom Fr. Duvall had the relationship was male or female. The archdiocese answered on July 27, “We have nothing to add beyond this information provided to parishioners.”
