Pro-abort Democrat Steve Sisolak ‘hoodwinking’ Silver State faithful

LAS VEGAS (ChurchMilitant.com) – A Nevada gubernatorial candidate is touting his frequent Mass attendance in a bid to win the vote of Silver State Catholics, but a closer look reveals his Catholic “credentials” are threadbare.

Clark County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak, a Democrat, has set his sights on the governor’s mansion in Carson City and hopes Nevada Catholics will hand him the keys. To casual observers, Sisolak projects an image of fidelity to the Faith. Described as a “devout Catholic” in the Las Vegas press, he attends Mass regularly. On Fridays, he prays at the city’s cathedral. And he is always allowed to receive the Eucharist.

But outside the sanctuary, when campaigning, Sisolak is an unapologetic abortion activist.

In February, Sisolak’s Republican challenger Adam Laxalt — a pro-life Catholic — paid a visit to First Choice Pregnancy Services, a Las Vegas crisis pregnancy center. In response, Sisolak tore into both, blasting Laxalt’s pro-life stance as “beyond the pale.”

Sisolak advertising his “daily mass” attendance

“If his outspoken opposition to Planned Parenthood isn’t enough, his embrace of this shameful group is enough to demonstrate where he stands,” he continued. “As governor, I would protect access to women’s health care and a woman’s right to choose.”

Though conservatives were unsurprised by the anti-Laxalt barrage, they were infuriated by Sisolak’s smear against First Choice.

Victor Joecks of the Las Vegas Review-Journal leapt to the crisis pregnancy center’s defense:

Shameful? Really? Is it shameful to give pregnant women free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds? Is it shameful to give a pregnant mom emotional support and information on how abortion isn’t her only option? Is it shameful for a pregnant woman to choose life for her unborn child? Is it shameful for a mom such as Katrina, who chose to keep her child after visiting a different Las Vegas crisis pregnancy center, to call her baby “the best thing that has ever happened to me”?

Earlier this month, Joecks commented again on the controversy.

“Politics is a dirty business, but politicians usually avoid attacking charities supported by their own church,” he said. “Not Steve Sisolak.”

“Those statements are much more than political rhetoric. He’s personally attacking thousands of his fellow Catholics who support First Choice with time, money or prayer,” Joecks pointed out.

“He’s also attacking the Catholic Church, which, in its catechism, calls abortion a ‘moral evil’ and excommunicates people who formally participate in it,” he added.

Kathleen Miller, pro-life director for the diocese of Las Vegas, concurred: “I pray for Commissioner Sisolak,” she said. “You truly can’t be a devout Catholic and think it’s OK to kill human babies.”

Earlier this month, Sisolak was endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America, one of the most radical abortion activist groups in the country.

Adam Laxalt, Nevada attorney general

Despite Sisolak’s promotion of abortion — an intrinsic evil — Las Vegas-area faithful tell Church Militant he is regularly allowed to receive the Eucharist.

Newly-installed Bp. George Leo Thomas has yet to halt Sisolak’s sacrilegious Communions, and so far has been silent on Sisolak’s abortion activism — like his predecessor, former Las Vegas Bp. Joseph A. Pepe.

In contrast to Sisolak’s abortion advocacy, Laxalt, Nevada’s attorney general, is a quiet defender of the unborn. And the state’s Democratic machine hates him for it.

In a July 2 press release titled “Adam Laxalt’s Sinister Anti-Choice Agenda,” Nevada Democrats issued a catalog of complaints against the pro-life Catholic:

  • “Laxalt toured a fake clinic in Las Vegas in February.”
  • “Laxalt joined a U.S. Supreme Court case supporting fake clinics that discourage women from making their own health care decisions.”
  • “Laxalt quietly added Nevada to a lawsuit supporting an ‘unduly burdensome’ Texas abortion ban, also without consulting Gov. Sandoval.”
  • “Laxalt pushed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to restrict access to essential reproductive care.”
  • “Laxalt pushed to block abortion access in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case.”
  • “Laxalt is endorsed by Nevada Right to Life, an affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC).”

The vitriol directed against Nevada’s pro-life, Catholic, Republican attorney general speaks volumes, right to life advocates say — even more than Commissioner Sisolak’s self-promotional “morning Mass” tweets.
