National Rally and Rosary for Life to take place in March

DUBLIN (ChurchMilitant.com) – Pro-lifers are rallying across Ireland in support of the Eighth Amendment protecting the life of unborn children and their mothers.

On February 10, hundreds of family members and young women stood up for the unborn with heart-shaped balloons and posters at “Loving the 8th” event in Dublin’s coastal suburb of Dún Laoghaire. The event was organized by Dún Laoghaire Life Canvass and Cherish All the Children Equally.

“We were so delighted to see such a great crowd come out for this event today, and it’s really indicative of how people are becoming energized at a local level to save the 8th amendment ahead of the referendum,” commented spokeswoman Mairéad Hughes of Save the 8th Campaign.

Hughes continued, “It was such a positive event, pointing out that the pro-life 8th amendment protects both mother and baby, and is a provision [that] has saved so many lives.”
The Eighth Amendment to Ireland’s Constitution passed in 1983 with almost 67 percent in favor and 33 percent opposed. It outlawed abortion in all cases except for emergencies involving the life of the unborn child and the mother.

A referendum will take place in May over whether or not to repeal the Eighth Amendment and legalize abortion on the Emerald Isle. Abortion was legalized in limited cases in 2013, but repealing the Eighth Amendment would pave the way to much wider abortion access.

“I believe our laws currently show love to both mother and child, and we want people to understand that the 8th is life-saving, and that is why we’re Loving the 8th,” insisted Hughes. “The 8th encourages us to support women in crisis and to love both them and their baby, and surely that’s the most progressive and compassionate way forward for Ireland.”

The Save the 8th Campaign is one of 62 local groups working across Ireland to train a thousand volunteers to protect the lives of the most vulnerable.

Save the 8th said that “the rebellion has begun,” while students, parents and other adults defended life in cities, towns, villages and rural communities across Ireland this week.

Save the 8th has the goal of knocking on 700,000 doors by the day of the referendum, with almost 220,000 completed. The campaign is reaching out to thousands more through street stalls, public meetings and other campaign events in the coming months.

Niamh Uí Bhrian, a member of the campaign, remarked on the need to “take the fight” against those trying to repeal the Eighth Amendment.

“Over the past year, as we have prepared for this campaign, we have been astonished at the strength of feeling amongst the Irish people,” she remarked. “It has become abundantly clear that pro-life voters are not just concerned, they are mutinous. Now, the time for rebellion is upon us.”

Bhrian continued:

This referendum has been bought, packaged, and presented by a narrow clique of lobbyists, politicians, and full-time paid activists. … Our activists, by contrast, are ordinary people. They are young and old, religious and atheist, Irish-born and immigrant. All of them share a fundamental belief in the right to life, and a sense of outrage at the political establishment for the rigged process that has given us this unjust referendum.

The National Rally to Save the 8th will be held in Dublin City Centre on March 8. Save the 8th confirmed with Church Militant that it will “be the biggest mobilization against the abortion referendum.”

Ireland is hosting another costal Rosary event like the Rosary on the Coast for Life and Faith last November, which attracted more than 30,000 people to 295 registered locations across the Isle.

The Rosary at the Mass Rocks for Life and Faith will take place March 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Mass Rock locations and monastic sites throughout the country “to ask Our Lady and our deceased brethren, who gave their lives for faith, to intercede for Ireland, at this critical time in our History” for the protection of the unborn.”
