‘China is the best implementer of Catholic social doctrine,’ says Vatican bishop

The chancellor of the “new and improved” Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences praised the ‘extraordinary’ Communist state

“Right now, those who are best implementing the social doctrine of the Church are the Chinese,” a senior Vatican official has said.

Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, praised the Communist state as “extraordinary”, saying: “You do not have shantytowns, you do not have drugs, young people do not take drugs”. Instead, there is a “positive national conscience”.

The bishop told the Spanish-language edition of Vatican Insider that in China “the economy does not dominate politics, as happens in the United States, something Americans themselves would say.”

Bishop Sánchez Sorondo said that China was implementing Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’ better than many other countries and praised it for defending Paris Climate Accord. “In that, it is assuming a moral leadership that others have abandoned”, he added.

He accused US president Donald Trump of being “manipulated” by global oil firms, and said that, as opposed to those who follow “liberal thought”, the Chinese are working for the greater good of the planet.

The Vatican and China have been holding talks in recent years over the status of the ‘underground’ Church and the appointment of bishops. In November, the Vatican Museums also organised joint exhibitions with China in what was called “diplomacy of art”.

As part of the diplomacy efforts, Bishop Sánchez Sorondo visited the country. “What I found was an extraordinary China,” he said. “What people don’t realise is that the central value in China is work, work, work. There’s no other way, fundamentally it is like St Paul said: he who doesn’t work, doesn’t eat.”

Bishop Sánchez Sorondo concluded by saying that China is “developing well” and now has “many points of agreement” with the Vatican.

“You cannot think that the China of today is the China of [the time of] John Paul II, or Cold War Russia,” he said.

  1. Even I am surprised at how “all in” this People’s Revolutionary “church” under Habemus Pampas is with respect to its PR game. It seems a tad early to openly broadcast that Communism is now just hunky-dory and Red cannibals are just as spiritually qualified as as is a pope to make episcopal appointments! (But, heck, that’s priob’ly just me).
I suppose Jorge “feels” he’s in total control now, what with a 99.8% margin of NOs and neo-Cat conservatives in his pocket on contraception and sodomy as “permissible options”. So, why not just go ahead and cross the finishing line his 1960s predecessors at the non-council had their eye on, all along – right?
Tourists visiting sunny Nuovo Roma may be treated to an explosion of Chinese restaurants, soon, featuring obligatory paintings above the entrance way of Mao and Jorge shaking hands, sporting grins and holding up a banner with Mandarin lettering: “Who Am I To Judge?”

  2. Terrible–Our Lord gave special prayers of reparation specifically as to Communism–His mortal enemy–to Sister Mary of Saint Peter and here is the Vatican praising it and stomping on the real Church there for political reasons it seems….After the attempted Vatican “normalization” of homosexuality and the hatred of all things Traditional perhaps it is that there is not much difference as to what is now “occupying” the Vatican and the Communists praised by those in it? We are told that a time will come when Rome is destroyed….

  3. It already has been, tomk.
It’s taken 55 years and 4 months for folks to catch on, but it IS destroyed in every significant sense, morally and doctrinally.
Frankly, unless God decides otherwise, there won’t be any recognizable signs of Catholicism left in Rome in a decade.
The goon squads actually running their Potemkin Village there are working 3 shifts 7 days a week to make certain of that.
