Philippines president reverses again on gay ‘marriage’: It’s the ‘trend of modern times’

MANILA, Philippines, December 22, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — Foul-mouthed, anti-Catholic Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, infamous for his three-child per family population control proposal and push for contraceptives, has now flip-flopped yet again and come out in support of homosexual “marriage.”

Duterte had supported same-sex “marriage” in 2015, but then opposed it in March.

On Sunday in his hometown of Davao, Duterte advocated for same-sex “marriage” at the seventh annual LGBT Davao Year-End festival.

“I want same-sex marriage. … We can change the law,” he said, according to the Philippine Star. “I don’t have any problems making it marrying a man, marrying a woman or whatever is the predilection of the human being … If that makes the people happy, why stop it?” he said to jubilant applause.

“If that is the trend of the modern times, if that will add to your happiness, I am for it,” Duterte said.

“Why impose a morality that is no longer working and almost passé?”

Catholic and Evangelical leaders were quick to rebuff the president. “The trivialization of marriage is one of the fundamental reasons [for] the breakdown of individuals and human society,” Bishop Arturo Bastes of Sorsogon said, according to the Christian Times.

Bishop Noel Pantoja of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) agreed with Bishop Bastes that Filipinos must resist the gay agenda. The Christian Times quotes Pantoja warning that legalizing same-sex “marriage” would hurt “not only the Christian faith but also the morality and very destiny of our nation.”

“It will only marginalize religion and thus cause the very discrimination it seeks to avoid,” Pantoja reasoned. His organization opposes bills to legalize homosexual “unions” and codify gender ideology.

In 2015, before taking office, Duterte said homosexual “marriage” was “good” because “everyone deserves to be guaranteed happy.” After being in office less than two years, the Philippine Star quoted Duterte reversing himself, saying Filipinos should not follow the West’s on homosexuality. “Look at Time magazine. There is no more gender because you can be a he or a she,” he observed in March. “That’s their culture. It does not apply to us. We are Catholics and there is the civil code.”

The Philippines is 80 percent Catholic. Abortion, homosexual “marriage,” and divorce are illegal.

In 2016, Duterte lashed out against Catholic leaders, calling bishops (including the Pope) “sons of whores” and saying they should be “ashamed.” He also called the Catholic Church “the most hypocritical institution.” He said when he was a minor he was abused by a minister.

The Catholic hierarchy has also been critical of Duterte, whose merciless “war on drugs” has slaughtered thousands.

At Sunday’s LGBT event Duterte added he is willing to appoint a homosexual to his administration, and asked the LGBTQIA+ community until mid-January to recommend someone.

  1. “The Catholic hierarchy has also been critical of Duterte, whose merciless “war on drugs” has slaughtered thousands.”
But the bishops support “gay” rights and socialist justice. THATS WHY THEY NEED EVANGELICALS TO FIGHT FOR THE FAMILY. They are the Tagle/Bergoglio “Mercy” train. Unqualified “MERCY” AT ALL COSTS and without subleties or refined intellectual distinctions. After all, its too complex for shallow minds such as Carinal Tagle’s to make distictions.
