Francis, Ratzinger Was “The Only Man With The Stature To Be Elected Pope”

Pope Francis urged the Cardinals at the 2005 conclave not to vote for him but for Cardinal Ratzinger during a crucial ballot, he told Argentinian journalist Hernán Reyes Alcaide in another interview book.

Cardinals swear an oath before the conclave not to reveal ever anything that happened during the election of a pope.

In 2005 Francis believed that the time for a Latin American pope had not yet come. According to him, Ratzinger was “at that moment in history” the only man “with the stature, the wisdom and the necessary experience to be elected.”
