In election statement, Nicaraguan bishops rue nation’s ‘demoralization’

Leftist Daniel Ortega, who held power from 1979 to 1990, has served as president since 2007. Calling for prayer, the bishops acknowledged the prospect of electoral fraud and left the decision to vote to each citizen’s conscience. They added, “The demoralization of a people leads to apathy, to let others decide; let us never forget that we, the people of Nicaragua, have the last word.”
