Nov. 1-8 visits to cemetery for Holy Souls

The current ecclesiastical regulations in force are as follows:

On All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2) a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit any parish church or public oratory and there recite one Our Father and one Credo.

On all the days from November 1 though November 8 inclusive, a plenary indulgence applicable only to the poor souls is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray (even if only mentally) for the departed.

Conditions for both indulgences:
1.
Only one plenary indulgence can be granted per day.

2.
It is necessary to be in the state of grace, at least by completion of the work.

3.
Freedom from attachment to sin, even venial sin, is necessary; otherwise the indulgence is only partial. By this is meant attachment to a particular sin, not sin in general.

4.
Holy Communion must be received each time the indulgence is sought.

5.
Prayers must he recited for the intentions of the Holy Father on each day the indulgence is sought. No particular prayers are prescribed. One Our Father and one Hail Mary suffice, or other suitable prayers.

6.
A sacramental concession must he made within a week of completion of the prescribed work. One confession made during the week, made with the intention of gaining all the indulgences, suffices.

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine; et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen.

Don’t forget your holy water.
Also for those unable to receive the Sacraments and can’t do a plenary indulgence, you are sure to at least gain a partial.

An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory,
is granted tothe faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if onlymentally, for the departed.
    The indulgence is plenary each day from the1st to the 8th of November;
on other days of the year it is partial.
Visit to a Church or Oratory on All Souls Day [November 2]
(Visitatio ecclesiae vel oratorii in Commemoratione omnium fidelium defunctorum)

A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful,
who on the day dedicated to the Commemoration of all the faithful departed piously visit a church,
a public oratory or—–for those entitled to use it —–a semipublic oratory.

The above indulgence can be acquired either on the day designated above or,
with the consent of the Ordinary, on the preceding or following Sunday or the Feast of All Saints [November 1].

The above indulgence is contained in the Apostolic Constitution The Doctrine of Indulgences,
Norm 15, with account being taken of proposals made to the Sacred Penitentiary in the meantime.

In visiting the church or oratory, it is required,
according to Norm 16 of the same Apostolic Constitution, that “one Our Father and the Creed be recited.”

  2. One indulgence a day? How stingy! I for one prefer the traditional teaching which was:

All Souls’ Day and the Toties Quoties Indulgence
From noon on November 1 to midnight on November 2 (a span of 36 hours), the Catholic faithful, as often as they visit a church to pray for the faithful departed, and recite six times during each visit the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intentions of the Church, may gain a plenary indulgence applicable only to the souls in purgatory, under the usual conditions of:

Confession (within a week before or after)
Holy Communion (within the day before or up to a week after)

This plenary indulgence may also be gained from noon on the following Saturday to midnight on the following Sunday, but only by those who did not gain it on the preceding November 1 and 2. Note: When November 2 falls on a Sunday, All Souls’ Day is transferred to November 3 and the gaining of the Toties Quoties indulgence begins on Sunday, November 2, at noon, lasting all through the day until midnight on November 3.

Other Indulgences for the Month of November
Those who, within the octave of All Souls’ Day, visit the cemetery in a spirit of piety and devotion and pray, even only mentally, for the departed, may gain a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions (confession, Communion, and an Our Father and a Hail Mary for the intentions of the Church (on each day of the octave, applicable only to the Holy Souls in purgatory.

Those who recite prayers or perform other devout exercises for the departed during this month may gain an indulgence of 3 years each day of the month, and a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions, if they perform these devotions daily for the entire month.

Those who during November take part in public services held in a church in intercession for the faithful departed may gain an indulgence of 7 years on each day of the month, and a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions if they do so on at least 15 days.

    Ha! I agree.
A good Priest told us if we ask our lord for the Toties Quoties we can still hope to receive them for the Holy Souls.

  4. November 1 though November 8 inclusive

    • For Indulgences During the rest of the Year

      • Those who visit the cemetery and pray for the departed may gain an indulgence of 7 years on any day of the year, applicable only to the departed.
