This a picture of then Milan auxiliary bishop, Mario Delpini, offering Mass during World Youth Day 2013 in San Paolo, Brazil. The photo shows how a couple of male and female young people “concelebrate” with him during the doxology, the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer, the most central part of Mass [i.e., the Words of Consecration contained in the Eucharistic Prayer – AQ moderator Tom]. Lay-celebration of Mass is punished with excommunication [i.e., for (dis)simulating a Sacrament – AQ moderator Tom]. In July Pope Francis named Delpini as the new archbishop of Milan, the biggest Catholic diocese of the world. The picture was published on the official news page of the diocese and later removed.

  1. I notice the girls are really getting into it… lifting the chalice high. The boys – not so much. They seem bored with the whole affair. maybe coerced into participating? Of course the “able-bodied” priests in the background (who by all rights should be the ones performing sacred ritual actions) appear to look on approvingly. This image speaks much about why there is a dearth of young men pursuing a priestly vocation. Bur don’t worry! According to Francis the vocation crisis is a “tall tale!”
