On Sunday Father Juan José Mateos Castro, the Vicar General of Catholic Diocese Cádiz y Ceuta, welcomed a Hindu procession in honour of the Hindu Deity Ganesh in the Catholic Church of our Lady of Africa in Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa.

Ganesh is a well-known idol with an elephant head. During the Hindu procession Catholics greeted Ganesh with the Marian hymn Salve rociera.

On Monday Bishop Rafael Zorzona Boy of Cádiz y Ceuta issued an apology calling the event “regrettable” and saying that it caused “pain, confusion or scandal in the Christian community”. He accepted the resignation of his vicar general.

  1. Moses who? (Throw another coal on Wojtyla.)

  2. Not sure whether Spock, Captain Kirk, Master Po, and Kwai Chang can get away from their relief efforts or coverage of the Burning Man festival yet, but just in terms of modernist liturgical music in the Spirit of Vatican II, what is the folk guitar song for greeting processions of the elephant god deity?
