Defender Of Pope Francis Gets Himself (And Francis) Into Troubles

Pope Francis’ mediocre theological advisor, Archbishop Víctor Manuel “Tucho” Fernández, rector of the Catholic University in Buenos Aires [and expert on the “art of kissing” in his book Heal Me With Your Mouth], issued a defence of “Amoris Laetitia” in Medellín, the theology journal of the Latin-American Bishops’ Conference.

Fernández claims that Francis gave an “authoritative interpretation” of the controversial chapter eight of Amoris Laetitia, which seems to allow Communion for adulterers. He refers to a September 2016 letter which Francis wrote to the bishops of Buenos Aires. But this letter, instead of removing doubts about the orthodoxy of Amoris Laetitia, sheds doubts on Francis’ orthodoxy.

Then, Fernández claims that general moral laws are incapable of addressing “each and every” situation, but at the end of the day according to Fernández every adulterer has de facto a legitimate access to Holy Communion, which is a heretical position.

Using a questionable ‘extreme case tactic’ in order to get rid of the Gospel and of Catholic doctrine, he claims, for instance, that a woman who has been beaten by her Catholic husband, and who started living with another man, cannot be called an adulteress. Fernández seems not to notice that this cannot be decided by Amoris Laetitia but only by a Canonical process which examines the validity of the marriage bond.

Finally, Fernández claims that Francis is not primarily concerned with the use of “offensive language” such as “adulterer” or “fornicator” to describe people. Both terms are often used in the Bible.

Fernández himself offends critics of Amoris Laetitia as an “oligarchic group of ethicists”, although “oligarchs” are those in power, not those critical of the abuse of power. In December 2015 the Italian blog Opportune Importune published a 77 item list of invectives used by Francis against Catholics: Indice degli insulti papali ai buoni Cattolici.
