Stand-off with Catholic hospitals as euthanasia gains traction in Canada

[According to “mercy-killers”, the “Catholic” policy of transferring patients designated for “mercy-killing” to facilities that do such – will “traumatize” the patients possibly causing their death, so let’s kill them in the Catholic facility; such a “transfer” policy at a Catholic healthcare facility is immoral in se, comparable to a Catholic hospital at its own effort and expense, transferring to an abortion facility a pregnant women who wants an abortion but cannot get it at the Catholic hospital]

As euthanasia rates increase in the Canadian province of Ontario, pressure is mounting on Catholic Healthcare providers to abandon their blanket opposition to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).

Over 630 Ontarians have received MAiD since the procedure was legalised in Canada in 2015, according to data from the provincial coroner, yet none of these cases has taken place in a Catholic healthcare facility.

Lobby groups are now calling for sanctions on Catholic healthcare providers, particularly in light of the public funding these providers receive.

Dying With Dignity Canada CEO Shanaaz Gokool told CBA News that her organisation is considering a legal challenge of Catholic hospitals’ right to conscientiously object to participation in euthanasia.

Gokool says that the Catholic healthcare policy of transferring MAiD patients to secular facilities places an undue burden on patients. “It really depends on how precarious their physical medical condition is,” she said. “And if they are in a precarious state physically, then that can cause them more trauma.”

  1. Tom’s lead-in notes the parallel: “… comparable to a Catholic hospital at its own effort and expense, transferring to an abortion facility a pregnant women who wants an abortion but cannot get it at the Catholic hospital.” Let’s not forget that Cardinal O’Malley arranged a business deal in 2009 that would do just that: comply with state demands that women be transferred to killing centers. Were it not for Joe Doyle and Carol McKinley, O’Malley would have gone through with it. Finally, on account of his keen moral reasoning, O’Malley was made head of the USCCCP’s Pro-Life Kabuki Theater.

    • Yes, that’s what and who I had in mind. At that time I wrote about an imagined, ironic scenario of a group of pro-lifers led by a Boston archdiocesan priest picketing and doing sidewalk counseling in front of an abortion facility, when a vehicle with markings of one of the local Catholic hospitals arrives to deliver a woman or women who wanted an abortion but could not get it at the hospital – arranged according to the Cardinal’s agreement with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
