WARSAW, Poland – President Donald Trump spoke to a crowd of Polish citizens and dignitaries in Warsaw on Thursday, during his second official international trip. Trump spoke of the history of Poland as a nation that had survived and preserved its culture and its faith in the face of relentless occupation and attack. “The story of Poland is the story of a people who have never lost hope, who have never been broken and who have never, ever forgotten who they are.” Trump said.

The president referred to Pope St. John Paul II twice, once referring to him by the title of saint and the second time in reference to his role in the fall of Communism.

“And when the day came on June 2, 1979, and one million Poles gathered around Victory Square for their very first Mass with their Polish pope, that day every Communist in Warsaw must have known that their oppressive system would soon come crashing down,” said President Trump.

Trump continued:

They must have known it, at the exact moment during Pope John Paul II’s sermon, when 1 million Polish men, women and children suddenly raised their voices in a single prayer. One million Polish people did not ask for wealth. They did not ask for privilege. Instead, 1 million Poles sang three simple words: ‘We Want God!’

The president’s speech touched heavily on the value of Western civilization itself. Trump mentioned the West 12 times in his 36-minute speech. He mentioned civilization nine times and four times in reference to preserving or defending Western civilization.

Trump spoke extensively about the Warsaw Uprising and the fight for Jerusalem Avenue in the face of fierce gunfire. The president used the story as a segway to make his point of the worthiness of preserving Western civilization. “Those heroes remind us that the West was saved with the blood of patriots; that each generation must rise up and play their part in its defense and that every foot of ground and every last inch of civilization is worth defending with your life.”

Trump’s remarks fly in the face of the liberal opinion that all cultures are of equal value or that the West is at best equal to other civilizations or at worst doesn’t truly exist. French President Emmanuel Macron, after he was elected, exhibited such an attitude, saying, “There is no such thing as French culture.”

Church Militant has reported on several positive developments in both the Church and the political spheres in Poland. Poland’s policy towards Middle Eastern Muslim migrants since the outbreak of the migrant crisis has stood in stark contrast to nations such as France and Germany. Seventy-four percent of Poles oppose bringing in migrants from Africa and the Middle East. The E.U. on June 14 gave Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic a deadline to begin accepting migrants as have other Western European nations. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymanski responded by saying that Poland was ready to defend itself legally.

In January, Poland officially marked the 300th anniversary of Our Lady of Czestochowa by an act of recognition of Our Lady as Queen of Poland by Parliament. In November, the Polish bishops officially recognized Jesus Christ as King of Poland.
