Relativism: On December 17th, the anti-Catholic Italian journalist Eugenio Scalfari, to whom Pope Francis talks regularly, revealed in La Repubblica, that Francis said to him, “Each of us has his own vision of the absolute. From this point of view there exists also relativism, which is placed alongside our religion.” The Vatican did not deny Scalfari’s claims.
If His Holiness said such, then he sounds as Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy did in His Honor’s 1992 majority opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, upholding the 1972 Roe v. Wade abortion decision:
At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life…. people have organized intimate relationships and made choices that define their views of themselves and their places in society, in reliance on the availability of abortion in the event that contraception should fail…
