Oklahoma voters retain state Blaine amendment

[Anti-Catholic prejudice – both old (WASPish) and new (liberal) style (although more inspired by the latter than the former) – still persists in the Sooner State]

Catholic World News – November 10, 2016

By a 57%-43% margin, Oklahoma voters rejected a ballot initiative that would have overturned a “Blaine amendment” that is part of the state’s 1907 constitution.

Section II-5 of the constitution states, “No public money or property shall ever be appropriated, applied, donated, or used, directly or indirectly, for the use, benefit, or support of any sect, church, denomination, or system of religion, or for the use, benefit, or support of any priest, preacher, minister, or other religious teacher or dignitary, or sectarian institution as such.”

The section thus “prohibits state money from going to religious organizations, even when those organizations have standard state contracts, do not use the funds for proselytization, and, most importantly, serve everyone who comes through their doors,” said Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City, who called for its removal. “It is a ‘Blaine Amendment,’ one of a series of state constitutional provisions that were designed to exclude Catholics from providing religious education and from public life more generally.”

Addendum from the referenced Tulsa World article:

The question came about after that the section of the constitution that it sought to remove was used as grounds to remove a statue of the Ten Commandments from the capital.
Before the election, the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma called the measure, ” an affront to principles of religious liberty that have been with us since our nation’s founding and were so fundamental that the founders of our state saw fit to enshrine in our own constitution. Oklahomans of faith and Oklahomans of no religious faith at all can agree that the matters of belief are too important to be left to politicians.”
Last week, U.S. Sen. James Lankford R- Oklahoma said its passage would correct a virus that is in the Oklahoma constitution during a speech before members of the clergy.
He said the section, which is known as the Blaine Amendment, was designed to discriminate against Catholics and was “being used as a vehicle to shut down the faith community.

  1. This is exactly as it should be. He who pays the piper calls the tune. When “Catholic” hospitals, universities, and charitable organizations accept government funding at any level, they invite the government to dictate what they can and cannot do.

  2. The public statements and antics of Pope Francis have added strength to Protestant fundamentalist anti-Catholic bigotry and the belief among them that the Pope is the Antichrist. It will take decades to undo the damage of his modernist pontificate. Don’t expect illiterate or uneducated Protestant fundamentalists to reform when the current heretical Pope feeds such errors. You cannot exaggerate the damage Bergoglio has done by feeding anti-Catholic bigotry.

  3. A brief visit to Youtube will now show you quite a few videos showing the present Pope as the Antichrist and backing up their claim by QUOTING THE POPE DIRECTLY!!
This Pope feeds Protestant fundamentalist anti Catholicism almost every time he opens his mouth.
The liberal Protestants love him. He is one of their own.
I cringe when the Pope speaks as I think he sets conversion of any slightly Catholic leaning Protestant back 100 years.

I still thank almighty God that I converted to the Catholic Church years ago, in spite of first seeking counsel from a priest, who told me that of course Genesis is not true, offered me no reason at all to convert from my Protestant church, and then finished the meeting without making the slightest effort to arrange further interviews, even though I had told him I was interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. Apparently he was looking forward to our present Pope’s ideal of no proselytism.
I really believe that the converts the Church gets now are due solely to the Holy Spirit and are in spite of the Pope, bishops and priests.
Pope Francis feeds every fundamentalist Protestant’s perfect ideal of the Antichrist. One who stands in the place of Christ but preaches a heretical non Christian credo.
