Abortion ‘Destigmatized’ at Chicago Jesuit University

CHICAGO – An abortion activist group is conducting fake abortions on a Catholic Jesuit campus to “destigmatize” abortion.

Students for Reproductive Justice (SRJ) — an unapproved student group at Chicago’s Loyola University — conducted a “papaya workshop” in September. The group claims the workshop’s purpose is to teach people about aspiration abortions and “destigmatize abortion in general.” The group’s Facebook page comments that aspiration, or vacuum abortions, are “very similar to sucking the seeds out of a papaya.”

The event was sponsored by the Midwest Access Project, a group that trains people how to perform abortions. Abortion tools for the workshop were provided by the Chicago Women’s Center, a local abortion mill.

The Catholic university is so far refusing to grant the group official student club status. On September 28 school officials told SRJ leave the campus when it was conducting a protest and handing out condoms and birth control information on campus.

In a press release the group maintains the school “has a strict policy against providing contraception to its students,” and quotes the university’s website as saying, “In keeping with the Jesuit Catholic beliefs about family planning that are espoused by Loyola University Chicago, the Wellness Center does not provide oral contraceptives or other devices for the purpose of preventing pregnancy.”

Despite its complaint, the SRJ did manage to win one battle. It had complained about pro-life material being present at the university’s Wellness Center, a campus clinic for students. The group complained that material provided by a crisis pregnancy center conveyed “medically inaccurate information” about abortion.

The material was provided by Aid for Women, an organization that provides counseling, testing and support for pregnant women. It provides a 24-hour crisis hotline and even provides housing for pregnant women in difficult situations. All services are free.

Loyola University in Chicago has had a yearly drag show since 2007 conducted by campus LGBT activists and has gone unimpeded by Catholic school officials for 10 years.
