New Philadelphia mayor sought additional $4M reimbursement for papal visit

[“A new broom (i.e., a new mayor but still a Democratic hack) sweeps clean.” He says he will also seek extra money from the Democratic Party to cover similar expenses for its recent national convention in Philadelphia. Will the mayor of Krakow, Poland, get the same idea and seek more from the Vatican for the recent World Youth Day there?]

In May, the administration of Philadelphia’s new mayor, Jim Kenney, sent the World Meeting of Families an additional $4 million bill for expenses incurred during the September 2015 papal visit, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Under the contract signed by the city’s former mayor, Michael Nutter, the World Meeting of Families reimbursed the city for $8.6 million in costs during the visit but did not have to pay for costs on the days preceding and following the visit.

“Since approximately $4 million of those costs would not have ever been incurred by city departments had the event not occurred, the Kenney administration requested to be reimbursed an additional $4 million,” a city spokeswoman said.

The World Meeting of Families did not pay the additional $4 million.

“Mayor Nutter acknowledged that World Meeting of Families had covered the costs it was expected to shoulder,” said a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. “We are very grateful to the city and all of its workers for their tremendous support before and during the events.”
