State Department annual religious freedom report

[It did not include the US among the countries where religious freedom is restricted; see comment below for a recent example]

Catholic World News – August 11, 2016

The US State Department has issued its annual international religious freedom report …

David Saperstein, ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, said in an August 10 briefing that “76% of the world’s countries provide the basic conditions for people to freely practice their religion or beliefs.” Nonetheless, he said, nearly three-quarters of the world’s people live in the 24% of countries where religious freedom is severely restricted.

  1. Pittsburgh Diocese: Federal government aggressively pushing HHS mandate despite suit

    Catholic World News – August 11, 2016

Three months after the US Supreme Court gave a temporary victory to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh, and other plaintiffs who objected to the HHS mandate, the Diocese of Pittsburgh contended that the Obama administration is trying to force its insurance providers to cover contraception.

In Zubik v. Burwell, the high court asked lower courts to determine whether a compromise could be reached that would satisfy the demands of Catholic institutions that challenged the policy requiring contraceptive coverage in health-care programs.

As that stage of the case proceeds, the diocese said in a statement that “the government has been slow to offer anything of substance to pursue a negotiated solution” and “is apparently trying to take over – to force our third-party administrators to include the objectionable coverage in our self-insured plans.”
