Frs. Pfleger and Pavone on Hillary

In a recent Facebook post, Father Michael Pfleger, who was supporting Bernie Sanders, decided to endorse Hillary Clinton, albeit unenthusiastically:

Although, I supported Bernie, Hillary seems now to be the Democratic Candidate for President……what I do know is that Trump cannot win!!!!! Donald Trump is the Candidate who has rounded up the worse of America for a kind of “last Hope ” for the Racists, Bigots, Sexists and Supremists to keep control!!!! While Hillary may not excite us…..Trump ought to scare us!!!!! It is not the future of the White House that is at stake, but the future of our Souls

Father Pfleger is perhaps the only priest-activist here in the U.S. who can get away with publicly saying and doing just about anything. It’s been like that for years. I can’t help but wonder if he knows where the bodies are buried in the Archdiocese of Chicago, so to speak.

I asked Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, to respond to Father Pfleger’s unsurprising endorsement.

  1. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Notice they said endowed by their Creator not Hillary, not Bernie, not Trump and certainly, not Pfleger. That these rights are unalienable means they cannot be taken away by any earthly power except in defiance of the Creator. And who is the Creator? That would be God Almighty, the Triune God to whom we all pray or should!

  2. While Fr. Pavone is a welcome improvement over Fr. Pfleger on the subject of abortion, Fr. Pavone is not wholly correct and on the up-and-up on this topic either.

    He has said that if one does not vote for a viable Republican candidate for the presidency who says he is pro-life, and instead chooses to vote for a minor candidate, believing that minor candidate is more authentically pro-life and pro-family than the GOP candidate, that purist Catholic voter would share in the moral culpability of any Democratic presidential victory and the ensuing Democratic presidential policies on life and family.

    I think not.
