A few days before it opens, the pan-Orthodox Council is in danger of failing. The patriarchates of Bulgaria, Georgia, and Antioch have announced their withdrawal, and Moscow is supporting them. The discord has been sown by the recent meeting in Cuba between Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who holds a primacy of honor in Eastern Orthodoxy, has issued a message for World Oceans Day, which took place on June 8.
“Now, more than ever, it is crucial to respect and protect this invaluable and inalienable resource of our planet, which is a unique source of nurture and biodiversity,” he said. “Our dependency on fossil fuels drives society’s indifference toward creation care.”
