We must proclaim the ‘truth about the conjugal union’ to renew Christian culture, says Cardinal Burke

We must proclaim the ‘truth about the conjugal union’ to renew Christian culture, says Cardinal Burke

WALSINGHAM, U.K., June 6, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Raymond Burke has put forward the thesis that the rapid decline of western Christian culture will not begin to be reversed until Catholics boldly live out and then proclaim to the rest of society the “truth regarding human sexuality and human life.”

The cardinal offered no critique of Pope Francis, but many of his arguments offered a clear corrective to much-criticized points from the Holy Father’s recent Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia.

  1. Sorry, Eminence, but you do not go far enough.

“The attack on the innocent and defenseless life of the unborn, for example, has its origin in an erroneous view of human sexuality, which attempts to eliminate, by mechanical or chemical means, the essentially procreative nature of the conjugal act. The error maintains that the artificially altered act retains its integrity. The claim is that the act remains unitive or loving, even though the procreative nature of the act has been radically violated. In fact, it is not unitive, for one or both of the partners withholds an essential part of the gift of self, which is the essence of the conjugal union. The so-called “contraceptive mentality” is essentially anti-life. “

Unless and until the Church proclaims the whole truth that NFP, used as a means of limiting family size, is equally pernicious as it denies the “conjugal act” of its fecundity via deliberate connivance of the couple — unless and until, Catholics will fall prey to the worldly ideals of the Planned-Parenthood mentality.

Pope Paul VI is no hero in his promulgation of Humanae vitae, as it approved NFP while failing to distinguish the primary and secondary ends of marriage. Unless and until the Church restores its teaching on the primary end of marriage and condemns the notion that couples choose the size of their families, we will be stuck in the PP mentality and will be impotent to fight against the wiles of the devil.

As for sex-ed, Your Eminence recommends the 1990’s document TMHS, a bull-dung rehash of the non-opposition to indoctrination of kids in the classroom. Get back to Pius XI, please. You never, never teach intercourse in the classroom. That is child abuse. And you, Cardinal Burke, are as guilty as sin for not screaming against the imprimatur your brother bishops put on the PP-style program Growing in Love that teaches intercourse to 4th Graders and anal sex to 6th Graders.

In conclusion, for shame, Your Eminence. You are one of the few bishops we could look up to, but you give us the same old same old, the modernist dung that has millions of Catholics enslaved to their passions. For shame, all you bishops.

    Amen, amen, Cyprian!
I will commend Pope Paul VI, though, for his clear condemnation of artificial contraception. For this he suffered greatly, as duty required. Only a celibate, among all Christian leaders, was willing to confirm this timeless Christian teaching in the midst of so much upheaval and opposition. My own parents were frustrated by the delay in the final arrival of the condemnation, but in the meantime they just kept having babies… no NFP. Deo gratias!

    • Agreed, on Paul VI holding the line on artificial methods when everyone was expecting a reversal. The question is, why? Since Francis has thrown in the towel on artificial means — in “extreme” cases, of course — as well as communion for adulterers, why didn’t Paul VI give in? Would that have been too big a step so early in the revolution? Of did God not permit him to fall?

      • Apart from the supernatural component which I believe played the predominant role, perhaps there was also the momentum of the pre-Vatican II Church. Like a giant freighter moving full speed ahead. When the power is lost the vessel keeps moving for quite a distance before stopping. Large Catholic families were still easy to be found in the 70’s, but alas now they seem to be a vanishing breed. So also great churchmen formed by the TLM were still around in the immediate aftermath of Vatican II, but their influence seems to have slowly waned as the new Mass has exerted its tragic influence on the Church. Revolution indeed.
