Two out of Three Mass-Attending Catholics Support Homosexuality

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) – Approximately two out of three U.S. Catholics who attend Mass weekly believe homosexuality should be accepted and not discouraged, according to a recent Pew Research poll. The poll, conducted immediately after the 2014 extraordinary Synod on the Family, found that 60 percent of weekly Mass-attending Catholics believe society should welcome the homosexual lifestyle.
In the wider context, out of all Catholics — those who regularly attend Mass and those who do not — 70 percent are accepting of homosexuality.
Of those in the pews every week, only 30 percent believe that same-sex acts — which the Church teaches are “intrinsically disordered” and acts of “grave depravity” — should be discouraged. Ten percent declined to answer.
The numbers of those supporting the gay agenda drop when it comes to the subject of so-called gay marriage. But among those who regularly attend Mass, those who support gay “marriage” slightly outnumber those who support traditional marriage 45–44 percent, with 9 percent declining to answer.
And the number of gay marriage supporters is rising. Catholics under 30 support homosexuality by an enormous margin: A staggering 85 percent of all Catholics 18–29 believe society should accept the homosexual lifestyle. Only 13 percent believe it should be discouraged. A full three quarters of all Catholics 18–29 believe homosexual “marriage” should be legal.
Even among older Catholics, who are more likely to both go to Mass and stand by the Church’s teachings, a majority — 57 percent — believe homosexuality should be accepted. However, those who support homosexual marriage itself are still a minority at 38 percent.
Acceptance of homosexuality among all Catholics has jumped 12 percent in the last eight years, and as older Catholics die and are replaced by younger members, this number is set to continue surging upwards.
With only 24 percent of Catholics attending weekly Mass, and 60 percent of those regular attendees supporting homosexuality, this leaves under 10 percent of all U.S. Catholics who both fulfill the precept of the Church to attend Mass, and uphold Her doctrine on homosexuality.
The study does show a correlation, however, between Mass attendance and adherence to Church teaching. While 60 percent of Catholics in the pews accept homosexuality, that number jumps to almost 80 percent among those who don’t regularly attend Mass.
