Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows April 2-10

The Friday before Good Friday is traditionally dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.

Most Blessed and afflicted Virgin, Queen of Martyrs,
who didst stand generously beneath the cross,
beholding the agony of thy dying Son;
by the sword of sorrow which then pierced thy soul,
by the sufferings of thy sorrowful life,
by the unutterable joy which now more than repays thee for them;
look down with a mother’s pity and tenderness,
as I kneel before thee to compassionate thy sorrows,
and to lay my petition with childlike confidence in thy wounded heart.
I beg of thee, O my Mother, to plead continually for me with thy Son,
since He can refuse thee nothing, and through the merits of His most sacred Passion and Death,
together with thy own sufferings at the foot of the cross,
so to touch His Sacred Heart, that I may obtain my request,

Here pause and name the favours which you are asking Our Sorrowful Mother to obtain for you through this Novena.
(Let your secondary intention be to pray for the intentions of all the people making this Novena anywhere in the world.
Thus a great mass prayer for all Novena intentions will arise to Our Blessed Mother.)

For to whom shall I fly in my wants and miseries, if not to thee, O Mother of mercy,
who, having so deeply drunk the chalice of thy Son, canst most pity us poor exiles,
still doomed to sigh in this vale of tears?
Offer to Jesus but one drop of His Precious Blood,
but one pang of His adorable Heart; remind Him that thou art our life,
our sweetness, and our hope, and thou wilt obtain what I ask,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary, Virgin Most Sorrowful, pray for us (seven times)

    zuzu, I wonder where Futterlieb is?
    I miss him!

  4. Not sure, Cindy. If memory serves he lives about 150 miles east of me, so we’ve never met in the flesh. The one thing I do know that brings him out of the woodwork is lots of ongoing novenas, and Lent, as you well know, is a sparse time for them. Our Lady of Sorrows and St Joseph seem to be it.

    AQ to Futterlieb: check in! Your friends are worried.

    And Catherine, are you fully recovered I hope?

    Special intentions for the health my husband, son and myself along with the intentions of all who pray this Novena

  6. Thank you for thinking of me zuzu. I am now feeling much better. When I was first admitted to the hospital they thought it was severe influenza, but was viral meningitis. I’m very thankful for you and everyone who prayed for me, very consoling. God bless you.

    O my afflicted Mother! Queen of Martyrs and of Sorrows, thou didst so bitterly weep over thy Son, Who died for my salvation; but what will thy tears avail me if I am lost? By the merits, then, of thy Sorrows, obtain for me true contrition for my sins, and a real amendment of life, together with constant and tender compassion for the sufferings of Jesus and thy dolors. And if Jesus and thou, being so innocent, have suffered so much for love of me, obtain that at least I, who am deserving of Hell, may suffer something for thy love. “O Lady,” will I say with St. Bonaventure, “if I have offended thee, in justice wound my heart; if I have served thee, I now ask wounds for my reward. It is shameful to me to see my Lord Jesus wounded, and thee wounded with Him, and myself without a wound.” In fine, O my Mother, by the grief that thou didst experience in seeing thy Son bow down His head and expire on the Cross in the midst of so many torments, I beseech thee to obtain me a good death. Ah, cease not, O advocate of sinners, to assist my afflicted soul in the midst of the combat in which it will have to engage on its great passage from time to eternity. And as it is probable that I may then have lost my speech and strength to invoke thy name and that of Jesus, Who are all my hope, I do so now; I invoke thy Son and thee to succor me in that last moment; and I say, Jesus and Mary, to Thee I commend my soul. Amen.

  22. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.
