Francis Makes A “Fashion Statement”

Pope Francis on Feb. 14: “Old Mass? Just a kind of fashion!”
Yesterday (Friday, Feb. 14), Pope Francis held an audience with the Bishops of the Czech Republic who came to Rome for their ad limina visit.

In the visit, as it usually happens in such cases, other than the formal address, the Pope heard the questions and comments of the bishops. Archbishop Jan Graubner, of Olomouc, told the Czech section of Vatican Radio how it went:

[Abp. Jan Graubner speaks:] When we were discussing those who are fond of the ancient liturgy and wish to return to it, it was evident that the Pope speaks with great affection, attention, and sensitivity for all in order not to hurt anyone. However, he made a quite strong statement when he said that he understands when the old generation returns to what it experienced, but that he cannot understand the younger generation wishing to return to it. “When I search more thoroughly – the Pope said – I find that it is rather a kind of fashion [in Czech: ‘móda’, Italian ‘moda’]. And if it is a fashion, therefore it is a matter that does need that much attention. It is just necessary to show some patience and kindness to people who are addicted to a certain fashion. But I consider greatly important to go deep into things, because if we do not go deep, no liturgical form, this or that one, can save us.”

Roman weather: always hard to predict
Traditionalists are quite stable and strongly fashion-averse. But as for the winds in Rome!… Roma è mobile qual piuma al vento! Under seven years ago, the opinion of the then-reigning and still living Holy Father (one who was much more acquainted with the issue at hand) was quite different:

Immediately after the Second Vatican Council it was presumed that requests for the use of the 1962 Missal would be limited to the older generation which had grown up with it, but in the meantime it has clearly been demonstrated that young persons too have discovered this liturgical form, felt its attraction and found in it a form of encounter with the Mystery of the Most Holy Eucharist, particularly suited to them. 1. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, may your time as the bishop of Rome be brief!

  2. “…no liturgical form, this or that one, can save us.”

The True Mass has led countless souls to salvation. Simple Jorge is wrong again, to the surprise of absolutely no one.

    May his reign be short.

  3. “When I search more thoroughly – the Pope said – I find that it is rather a kind of fashion [in Czech: ‘móda’, Italian ‘moda’]. And if it is a fashion, therefore it is a matter that does need that much attention. It is just necessary to show some patience and kindness to people who are addicted to a certain fashion”.

Simple Jorge probably didn’t realize it, but he described perfectly the Vatican II church, the novus ordo service and the modernist “doctrines” formed in the 1960’s and 70’s that he and his ilk have subscribed to for fifty years. The whole Vatican II revolution was built on the “fashion” of the baby boomer, hippie, relativist liberal culture that was the secular world which the conciliar church adopted as its “fashions” in the 60’s and 70’s. Of course alot of their ideology came from protestant and “enlightenment” ideology and theology which went back centuries, but for Jorge to call the 1500 year old TLM a “fashion statement” just shows his ignorance (or arrogance) of history and theology. Those of us who try to live by the two-thousand year teachings and dogmas of Our Lord and His Catholic Church know who and what are the real “fashion statements” are.

  4. A fashion??? What a nincompoop! He thinks this is all about a fashion? I can’t believe it. The letter that Cardinals Ottaviani and Bacci with theological study attached was all about a fashion? The persecutions trads have endured in holding fast to Tradition as commanded by St. Paul was all about fashion? The FSSPX, ICK, FSSP, FFI and many other traditional groups are all anout a fashion? Archbishop Lefebvre ordained priests and consecrated bidhops in defiance of the reigning pope because of a fashion? No, Jorge, your explanation won’t cut it. Fact is, you’re a hypocrite pure and simple. Admit it and resign.

  5. Go deep into things the Pope says. Most Trads i know know the faith better than most of the Bishops seem to, so he must be talking about the Novus Ordo folks that now that the mass is in the vernacular know soo much. YEAH RIGHT!!!!

  6. St. Paul confronted St. Peter and chastized him directly for the good of the Church. Where is the St. Paul of our times, the senior member of the hierarchy ready to take Jorge to task for his persecutions of those holding fast to Tradition? The fact is there is no one with the guts to take on that responsibility. The hierarchy is really a bunch of wimps bending to the wishes of a modernist pope. It’s disgusting!

  7. On the positive side, if he doesn’t take the traditional Mass as a serious threat to the N.O. project. he will not devote many resources to opposing it. His attitude may afford more time and space for Tradition to continue making inroads into the main body of the Church.

He is probably far more concerned about the demographic time-bomb ticking away in the N.O. which will see it wither by 80% in the next 20 years in the west. If all the traditional apostolates keep growing at the same rate as they have in the last 20 years, then at some point trads will achieve a critical mass which can no longer be ignored or dismissed as a “fashion.”

    • On the positive side, if he doesn’t take the traditional Mass as a serious threat to the N.O. project. he will not devote many resources to opposing it.

I’m not sure about that. The pope has already been presented with a petition asking for the now very public persecution of the Franciscans of the Immaculate. So far: crickets.

  8. On the negative side Jorge has shown by his words and actions absolutely no sympathy for the traditional csuse. He says he has a great devotion to the Blessed Mother; let him show it by consecrating Russia to Her Immaculate Heart. He gets no props from me.

  9. FAITH
    FASHIONISTA
“Old Mass? Just a kind of fashion!”

    When Masses were mellow
    Every Priest, a real fellow
    No need to remember when
‘Cause ev’ry thing old is new again.

Daily, the Sacrifice of the Mass
    What-a-ya know, it didn’t pass
We still pray now like they did then
Ev’ry thing old is new again.

Get out your rosary, your black and white veils
Let’s go backwards as the modern mess fails
And the Latin words you thought were long dead
You’ll find in your missal, English black, Latin red.

    Don’t throw the past away
It’s your foundation as the new fashions sway
The True Faith’s intended, intended for men
When ev’ry thing old is new again.

So get your rosary, your black and white veils
Put it in backward when forward fails
Leave the new fashion designers alone
Be the Faith’s fashionista on your own.

And don’t throw the past away
    Absolute Truth will forever stay
“Behold! I make all things new.” so then…
Ev’ry thing old is new again!
