Cranmer’s Ungodly Mess Now OFFICIAL Part of the Catholic Church

A new text for the Catholic Mass which integrates centuries old Anglican prayers into the Roman Rite was officially introduced in a London church on Thursday.The new liturgy, known as the Ordinariate Use, has been devised for the personal ordinariates – the structures set up by Benedict XVI to allow Anglicans to enter into full communion with the Pope, while preserving elements of their distinctive Anglican liturgical and pastoral traditions.

The Mass, at the church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory, Warwick Street, was celebrated by the leader – or Ordinary – of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, Monsignor Keith Newton. It was offered in honour of the patron of the Ordinariate, Blessed John Henry Newman, whose feast was on October 9.

It began with words from the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer, first unveiled by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer in 1549: “Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee and worthily magnify thy holy Name…”

Traditional elements of the Roman Rite, such as the Last Gospel and the preparatory Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, options within the Ordinariate Use, were also included.

The sermon was preached by Monsignor Andrew Burnham, Assistant to the Ordinary and a member of the special working party set up by Rome which devised the new Use.

In his sermon, Mgr Burnham said: “Have we, in the Ordinariate, dreamed up our very own ‘hermeneutic of rupture’? Certainly, we have broken away from the Church of England, in which most of us had spent most of our lives. We have broken away too from the trajectory of modern Anglican liturgical revision. But we have most truly discovered in place of rupture ‘a hermeneutic of continuity’, that is we have found a way of joining together Cranmer’s linguistic brilliance, and feel for translation, with the ancient Canon of the Mass, prayed everywhere in England from the time of St Augustine until the Reformation, that is, a thousand years. And that Canon continues to be prayed throughout the Universal Church. There’s continuity for you.”

Mgr Burnham concluded his sermon with these words: “There are several contexts in which the Ordinariate Use will indeed be usual. There are others in which it will be celebrated seldom. But it is part of who we are, our Anglican DNA, and what we bring, and it will take its place, alongside Choral Evensong, and the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, as something which was once merely Anglican and is now part of the treasure-store of the whole Universal Church.”

  1. Although I understand that those posters on Angelqueen only want the TLM, or at least have it available in most parishes, this will probably never be the case.

    I wonder if anyone here has seen the New Anglican Use Mass or read the text. It has been judged before anyone knew what it would be.

    The article mentioned above mentioned the Prayer of Purity. This is not Cramers prayer. It was the beginning of the Sarum Use, which was in use in England many years before Henry the 8th.

    It is a legitimate part of one of the Catholic liturgies from the past.

    With the new liturgy, much was taken from an Anglican Missal which follows closely with the TLM, except for the Confession. The Roman Canon is used and the language is close to the TLM,s.

    Yes there are prayers that were used in the Anglican liturgy, however, each of these that are part of the Mass are Catholic in theology.

    Actually the wording is much closer to much of the TLM than in the OF. The prayers at the foot of the altar, Asperges and Last Gospel are also part of the liturgy. There is very little coming from the OF Mass and in one short response the choir sings it in Latin. The priest I know also says all the secret or quiet prayers said in the TLM.

    There is so much bowing and genuflecting and from my recall many years ago as a teenager attending the TLM low Mass I don’t recall as much bowing etc. At the Ordinariate parish I sometimes attend, the instructions given, that at the name of Jesus, Mary, the saint of the day and the Pope, all are to bow their heads. Also we genuflect for the Creed, Angelus, and the Last Gospel when the Incarnation is said.

    It is very reverent and there are parishes that choose to use Latin for the Creed, Gloria etc.

    The reason, in my opinion that the TLM was denied by the US Ordinary, is because of a certain American Cardinal and priest who put pressure on him. The Holy Father has allowed all the Ordinariates to celebrate the TLM, and the US is only one which has been denied. I know many priests who would like to be able to celebrate the TLM as one of the Masses offered, but of course they must be obedient. Let us pray that the Pope’s authority of this issue will resolve clerics in high places who are ignoring his wishes.

    Their liturgy is very reverent and chant and beautiful hymns are sung.

    Of course many of the groups have very little and must meet in Catholic Churches and set up an altar etc. so the Mass can be done ad orientem. Also purchasing vestments, which they still use the maniple, etc. is not always easy to afford, but many have been kind enough to help.

    As Catholics we all have our own desires on how we want the Mass to be celebrated, however, the OF/NO is here to stay and the AU is much closer to the TLM. The members follow Catholic doctrine much closer than some Catholics are doing today.

    • Cranmer invented an illicit and invalid vernacular “mess” and died a heretic.

    • Bernadette, as you point out, there are a lot of very Catholic elements in the Anglican Use, and I’d like to be glad that it is available. My worry is that there isn’t sufficient care among those in Rome to make sure that it doesn’t contain some of Cranmer’s poison along with his talent. No, I haven’t read it, but I’m not qualified. I don’t believe those in power are qualified, either, because of their being brought up on the New Theology and the NO Mass. While Benedict XVI would surely be able to discern differences, I’d suspect that he, too, would side with the newer thinking which is more in line with Cranmer’s rebellion than with the ancient Faith.

      This brings me to John Henry Newman, called Blessed. I do hope he saved his soul, and believe he was not a deceitful man. But his theology was Protestant, and he was more in line with the New Theology based on phenomenology and evolution than with St. Thomas. If you’d like to read more about the Newman’s shortcomings, see . That he has been declared blessed is likely due to the similarities between his thinking and that of Benedict XVI. That Anglican converts have been granted their own special usage of the Mass in line with Cranmer’s is likely because of Benedict’s appreciation of Newman, and his desire for further synthesis of the NO and TLM. Cranmer’s Mass provides a good vehicle for softening the distinction.

      As a “trad” who would love to see the resurgence of the TLM, I first long for a return to the Catholic Faith of the Fathers. I wouldn’t object to parts of the Holy Mass being faithfully translated into the vernacular, excepting the Canon, of course. These could possibly come forth as organic development, made by holy souls, much as the work of St. Cyril who brought the faith to the Slavs. In other words, it’s not the Latin nor the rubrics nor the genuflections. Rather, it’s the purity of the Faith.
