The God of Christians and the god of muslims – the same?

I’ve been having a back and forth on a local blog and the latest submission for the ‘who you worship and who I worship sit on the same throne’ crowd is this:

Christians and Muslims believe in the same God, the one God

Along the path marked out by Abraham in his submission to the divine will, we find his descendant, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, who is also devoutly invoked by Muslims, especially in popular piety.

2. We Christians joyfully recognize the religious values we have in common with Islam. Today I would like to repeat what I said to young Muslims some years ago in Casablanca: “We believe in the same God, the one God, the living God, the God who created the world and brings his creatures to their perfection” (Insegnamenti, VIII/2, [1985], p. 497). The patrimony of revealed texts in the Bible speaks unanimously of the oneness of God. Jesus himself reaffirms it, making Israel’s profession his own: “The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Mk 12:29; cf. Dt 6:4-5). This oneness is also affirmed in the words of praise that spring from the heart of the Apostle Paul: “To the king of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen’”(1 Tm 1:17).

We know that in the light of the full Revelation in Christ, this mysterious oneness cannot be reduced to a numerical unity. The Christian mystery leads us to contemplate in God’s substantial unity the persons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit: each possesses the divine substance whole and indivisible, but each is distinct from the other by virtue of their reciprocal relations.

My response was, ‘Popes are not perfect but the office is’. Does any one agree that Popes are not perfect and despite what JPII said, we do not pray to the same God as muslims, who deny God’s Fatherhood, Sonhood and the Holy Spirit?

  1. I’ve no doubt that moslems intend to worship God and probably sincerely think that they do, but I still wonder if they actually do, and if this is even an important distinction. C.S. Lewis in The Last Battle: The Chronicles of Narnia (I think) says in so many words, that God cares not what we do but why we do it. I am not so sure.

By way of analogy, lets say that I mailed off my mortgage payment this month, but failed to sign the check. Clearly I intended to pay my mortgage and thought that I had, but did I actually pay it?
Can I still claim that I did pay the motgage and object when the bank comes looking for its money?

  2. Do Bishop Fellay and Nancy Pelosi worship the same God?

  3. Samuel

    Good point.

Whatever Muslims are worshipping the Church has traditionally understood it to be – abominable, pagan, unyielding, diabolical etc. They reject the Trinity, the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost and God’s Fatherhood. They ain’t worshipping the God of Jacob, or the Apostles. Our God – Creator-Redeemer-Sanctifier is not to whom they give their faith or allegiance.

    Pope Callixtus III

“I vow to exalt the true Faith, and to extirpate the diabolical sect of the reprobate and faithless momahomet in the east

1456 Bull Ist Sunday of each month processions were to be made in every diocese in order to pray that the threatened Turkish invasion might be averted; the Missa contra Paganos (Mass against the pagan) was to be said and a suitable discourse to the assembled people. Every priest was to pray this prayer at every Mass: Almighty and everlasting God, to Whom all power belongs and in Whose Hands are the rights of all nations, protect thy Christian people and crush by THy power the pagans who trust in their fierceness

    Pope Eugene IV 1443

There is hope that very many from the abominable sect of mahomet will be converted to the Catholic faith.

    Pope Pius II 1462

Turn the anger of the Almighty against the godless Turks and Barbarians who despise Christ the Lord

1459 They have slain the successor of Constantine and his people, desecrated the temples of the Lord, defiled the noble church of Justinian with their mahometan abominations – each success will only be a stepping stone until he has mastered all the western monarchs, overthrown the Christian Faith, and imposed the law of his false prophet on the whole world.

    Pope Clement V

It’s an insult to the Holy Name and a disgrace to the Christian faith that in certain parts of the Christian world, the followers of Islam are allowed to meet in their temples in which the Saracens meet to adore the infidel mahomet, and they loudly invoke and extoll his name each day at certain hours from high places. This brings disrepute to our faith and gives great scandal to the faithful, these practices cannot be tolerated without displeasing the divine majesty, we enjoin on Catholics one and all. They are to forbid expressly the public invocation of the sacrilegious name of Mahomet

    Leo X

1517 The Turks and other infidels treat the Way of True Light and Salvation wit complete contempt and totally unyielding blindness

    Pope Benedict XIV

1754 Turkish or mahommeten names are forbidden be given in baptism of children and adults.

  4. Excellent link et cum spiritu

I’ve never been a fan of Lewis. His biographers show a man who wasn’t very truthfull in his dealings with people – have to wonder if that made it’s way into his writing. Some academic Narnianists are in no doubt that his works were based on astrological types and employed various occult/alchemical themes.

  5. withhope proves Vatican Council II is crazy.

  6. This article from William Kilpatrick is two years old:

The comments would be considered neurotic/whateveraphobic now.

This is William Kirpatrick’s overview recently:

Seems like the for the father of lies its things as usual:

  7. P.s. for those who check out the youtube link, if tenderhearted mute the last couple of minutes where the ‘wishes’ of some Muslim preachers regarding Christians are repeated for the audiences edification.

  8. The only ones adoring the same god are the jews and muslims. Both adore Baphomet.
