Bill Donohue comments on yesterday’s episode of “Ellen”:
Jessica Lange is mostly known as King Kong’s girlfriend, though she has found a new life bashing nuns in the FX disaster, “American Horror Story: Asylum.” Joining with her yesterday was the ever sensitive Ellen DeGeneres, a woman who bravely stands up against gay bashing. But when it comes to Catholic bashing, she is quite at home acting as an accomplice. Never once did she challenge Lange.
Lange and DeGeneres had a good time feeding the worst possible stereotype of “mean” nuns. Lange admitted, with typical Hollywood brilliance, that she “wasn’t raised in any kind of religious situation, so, I mean, we didn’t go to church or anything.” We believe her. In discussing nuns, words like “insanity” and “evil” just rolled off their incoherent lips.
Lange ends by saying that her character, Sister Jude, “is the result of this kind of crazy, wild, drunken, loose life she lived before.” Sounds like even Kong would have dumped this tramp.

Well, the isolated hollywood elites who tell us what the facts are (Churchill – there are facts and there are true facts). I guess King Kong is about as real as Lange’s Jude, only this time Lange gets to be the monster. Lange played Frances Farmer another eon ago, Farmer was something of a monster – Farmer loathed lesbians, but then she pretty much loathed everyone.
I wonder what Mother Teresa and her Mercy Sisters would think?
Or Katherine Drexel
or the uncounted unammed good women who have cared for and taught generations of children to have self-respect and respect for others.
The cold calvinist stream that entered Irish Catholicism is a small and sad portion that is constantly blown well out of proportion, but then this is hollywood, who now consult imams so as not make sure their movies are halal – I guess they didn’t consult the local Mother Superior about this.
or
one good result might be that kids getting a good Catholic education might think twice before thinking Ellen DeGeneres is the spotless ambassador of goodenss that the talk show depends of. They might get a hint that the ‘new nice’ and the ‘the new normal’ is not something to aspire to.
Sad.
Earlier this year, liberals had discovered and were praising nuns for their social justice work mostly because they had discovered many liberal nuns supported Obama.
They need to make up their mind where they fall on this issue.
However, it’s absurd for non-Catholics who know absolutely nothing about Catholic religious life to try their hand at anti-Catholic portrayals of nuns.
She should go back to flirting with giant monkeys.
Partly as a penance, I actually watched some of last night’s episode of
American Horror Story and while the portrayal of the nun (Sister Jude) running the nuthouse was a bit crude and reflected some rather silly anti-Catholic stereotypes,
it was not that far removed from some neurotic liberal women who seek solutions to their problems in religious life.
The recovering skanky alcoholic character that Miss Lange plays, complete with working-class northeastern accent, is a bitter nutjob Jansenist with some sadistic tendencies.
Did any Catholic institution in Massachusetts ever administer spankings on bare bottoms with a rod? That’s a new one if the answer is yes.
The script seems to have been written by a bitter anti-Catholic and reflects absurd anti-Catholic liberal fantasies about nuns and priests.
The repetitive playing of the 45 record of “Dominique” by Sister Smile over and over again as psychiatric patients are being bullied and tormented is a bit over the top. Someone really gets a bang from hearing Jeanine Deckers’ “Singing Nun” song.
Along with the crude references to sexual perversion that pervade this television series. Think One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest meets The Exorcist, Porky’s, Born Innocent, Prisoner:Cell Block H and Night of the Living Dead .
If someone made a series like this about non-Christian white slavers torturing women there would be all kinds of protests about bias.
But this borders on anti-Catholic porn.
King Kong was better entertainment.
I don’t recommend watching this. It never would have passed the Hays Code or the Legion of Decency.
Pray for whomever felt the need to make an anti-Catholic series like this.
They’re wrestling with deep issues.
