Archbishop Lori denounces ‘godless secularism,’ Catholic politicians who favor abortion

At the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ special October 14 Mass and Pilgrimage for Life and Liberty at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore lamented the massive loss of human life through abortion, denounced pro-abortion Catholic politicians, and rued the mounting “culture of oppression” against religious believers.
“For some time now, both life and liberty have been under assault by an overarching, Godless secularism, replete with power and money, but sadly lacking in wisdom, both human and divine: a secularism that relentlessly seeks to marginalize the place of faith in our society,” he preached.
Since 1973, “over 50 million unborn children have lost their lives through abortion, and now the secularist assault on human life threatens the chronically and terminally ill and the frail elderly by the promotion of laws in various states to legalize physician-assisted suicide.”
“Secularism is able to make such inroads against life and liberty primarily because so many people have set aside their religious faith by ceasing to practice their faith or by compartmentalizing it in their lives, like elected officials who say they are personally opposed to intrinsic evils such as abortion while doing everything in their power to promote them,” he added.
“We are recognizing that a culture of life is also a culture of freedom and that a culture of death is a culture of oppression, indeed a dictatorship of relativism,” he continued. “Through [Mary’s] intercession, may we be given the wisdom, courage and strength we need to employ our God-given liberty to protect life, to strengthen the family and to continue contributing mightily to the common good of society for the good of our nation, for the up-building of the Church and for the salvation of souls.

Until the bishops start naming names and throwing down some actual excommunications, they are simply wasting everyone’s time. Even worse, this is an attempt to distract attention from the fact that the USCCB actually supported the passage of Obamacare, knowing the whole time that their limp-wristed obligatory criticisms would be ignored, and that the abortion-promoting aspects would not only remain but that they were in fact a primary focus of this bill. The fatuous “gentle persuasion” approach, if it ever had any teeth at all (and there is not much evidence of that), has long since degenerated into “wishful suggestion”, and even that may an overly generous characterization.
Essentially, I consider the USCCB to be a leftist political organization whose primary practical purpose is to allow American Catholic bishops to pursue their leftist agenda while pretending to be faithful Catholics. Anyone who thinks I’m wrong about this should provide many examples of member bishops’ condemnations of just a few of the more outrageous examples of USCCB left-wing activism; I won’t be holding my breath.

Although, on a nearby thread, it seems some folks with stars in their eyes still believe ANY ‘reconciliation’ is, someday, somehow ( somewhere over the rainbow? ) possible twixt Catholic Tradition and sunny Nova Roma.
