ANAHEIM – An Islamic mosque with plans to expand is now operating in a small former church that was previously occupied by a Maronite Catholic church.
The sale prompted questions – even from church parishioners – about the future of the site.
The Jafaria Islamic Society purchased the building at 1546 E. La Palma Ave. (near St. College Bouleverd) and has been using it as a mosque since June. The Islamic Society has plans to expand the building and change the façade with architecture more reminiscent of Islamic traditions.
The building is less than a mile from another mosque – the Islamic Institute of Orange County, on State College Boulevard.
St. John Maron Catholic Church, which follows the Maronite Catholic tradition founded by a fourth-century Syriac monk and is in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, had owned the building since August 1995.
As church attendance grew, St. John Maron made plans in 2005 to expand the building. It began construction in October 2008 but a few days before Christmas that year, a fire destroyed part of the building.
Instead of continuing with renovation and expansion, church leaders instead moved the church to Orange in October of 2010, leaving the future of the Anaheim building unclear.
Recently, church parishioners and nearby residents noticed that the Anaheim building had sold to a mosque.
“It does seem odd to me that a building consecrated as a church would be sold to an Islamic faith,” said Hilda Ramirez, a Catholic from Anaheim unaffiliated with St. John Maron. “But at least it’s still serving a religious purpose for people trying to do good.”
Officials at St. John Maron didn’t return phone calls seeking comment.
The website for the Islamic center shows that purchase of the 1.4-acre site next to Sycamore Junior High and the upgrades are estimated at $2.2 million.
A city spokeswoman said that building permits have been requested and granted for a 1,465-square-foot re-construction project. The mosque’s website states that it has plans to add a library and resource center.
New Zealand: School goes from Catholic to Muslim

A former Catholic school in Dunedin is about to become home to a secondary boarding school for Muslim boys.
The former St Patrick’s Primary School has been sold by the Dunedin Catholic Diocese to the Al-Noor Charitable Trust – a Christchurch-based charity established to form Islamic education institutions in New Zealand.
Trust chairman Mohammad Alayan said Muslim children attending state secular schools were subjected to an educational environment which pressured them to adopt values which were contradictory to Islamic values, such as evolution theory, sex relations outside marriage and drinking.
To alleviate this “cultural deficiency”, the trust plans to establish An-Nur Kiwi Academy (AKA) which will be the South Island’s first Islamic school.
Dr Alayan said the trust had intended to establish the academy in Christchurch, but the earthquakes prompted them to relocate it to Dunedin.
The academy would operate as a not-for-profit school under charitable status, and would accommodate about 100 Year 11 to 13 boys from across the country.
Despite the academy’s aim to provide a high quality education with an emphasis on the Islamic value system, Dr Alayan said the New Zealand national curriculum would be taught by about 15 to 20 staff which would include qualified Islamic studies and Arabic language teachers.
He said the academy could be opened as early as next year, but it would be more realistic to expect it to open at the start of 2014.
Otago Muslim Association secretary Bjorn Oscar Sollie was both surprised and delighted by the announcement.
“I’m very, very pleased. It will be a great asset for the Muslim community in Dunedin, as well as New Zealand.”
University of Otago politics lecturer and member of the Dunedin Muslim community Dr Najib Lafraie was also pleased with the announcement.
“It sounds like a good idea. We value the religious aspects of the schools. It is something important for Muslims,” he said.
“The whole environment emphasising morality and sense of community in the school is an important issue.”
Dunedin Catholic Diocese general manager Stuart Young said the school was sold on Monday, but settlement would not occur until early next year.
Everything but the school’s hall was sold in the deal. The hall will be relocated to the Catholic Church in Ranfurly, he said.
Mr Young declined to say how much the trust paid for the premises, but said it was “at the low end of the market scale”.
“It’s a happy end as far as we are concerned, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the new users do with the site.”

Shame on those who’ve done this deal the devil…let’s hope and pray it falls through.
Islam despises Christs and his flock. For those who’ve done the deal, you’ve dared the devil now dare to take a glance at this:
