Italian education minister wants ‘multicultural’ instruction

CWN – September 26, 2012

Italy’s education minister has called for changes in the the nation’s schools, to accommodate the increasing number of students from other cultures.

“There are students in our schools who come from different countries, cultures and religions,” said Francesco Profumo, opening a new library in Rome. He suggested an overhaul in the religion curriculum, since many new immigrants are Muslims. The schools should also reconsider their geography classes, he said.

Profumo called for an educational approach that would be “more open, more multiethnic and able to be relevant to the world.”
