Speaking on Sunday with NBC’s affiliate WPTV in West Palm Beach, Republican VP nominee Paul Ryan said that reinstating the Clinton-era “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy would be a step in the wrong direction.

“I talked to a lot of good friends of mine who are combat leaders in the theater, and they just didn’t think the timing of this was right to do this when our troops were in the middle of harm’s way in combat,” Ryan told the station. “Now that it’s done, we should not reverse it. I think that would be a step in the wrong direction because people have already disclosed themselves.”

When Congress voted to repeal the policy that prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military, Ryan was one of many Republicans to vote against it, emphasizing that he was uncomfortable with such a change during wartime.

But on Sunday, Ryan said that he no longer finds it to be an imperative: “I think this issue is past us. It’s done. And I think we need to move on.”

Let’s be honest and face the facts. Obama does not deserve to win. But Romney deserves to lose.
