“P— CHRIST” COMING TO NYC

Bill Donohue comments as follows:

On September 27, the Edward Tyler Nahem gallery in mid-town Manhattan will host an exhibit, “Body and Spirit: Andres Serrano 1987-2012,” that features Serrano’s “P— Christ” piece; it shows a crucifix submerged in a jar of his own urine. The exhibit ends October 26.

Serrano has said that “P— Christ” was “meant to question the whole notion of what is acceptable and unacceptable.” There is not much to question: decent people know it is unacceptable. But in elite cultural circles, anti-Christian art is not only acceptable, it is laudatory. Just don’t offend Muslims. To wit: this week a disrespectful French cartoon of Muhammad was not shown on any of the network or cable TV news shows.

In 2006, when the Danish cartoons that angered Muslims appeared, not only were they not shown on the networks or cable, newspapers all across the nation refused to do so. In fact, the leading newspapers echoed the position of the New York Times: it said it was wrong to publish “gratuitous assaults on religious grounds.” Yet this same newspaper, in the same article about the Danish cartoons, reproduced the “dung on the Virgin Mary” artwork that was shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s “Sensation” exhibition in 1999! To show how acceptable anti-Christian art is, three days after “Sensation” opened, Christie’s sponsored a “P— Christ” print exhibit.

“P— Christ,” which dates back to the late 1980s, wouldn’t matter as much to Christians in 2012 if it weren’t for the supine statements offered by the Obama administration in the wake of an anti-Islamic video. Never before have Americans learned how deeply offended our elites are by anti-religious fare. If only we could believe them. When have they ever condemned anti-Christian movies or art?

I will be there on Thursday with a contingent from the Catholic League. Details to follow next week.

White House won’t denounce “P— Christ” after repeatedly denouncing Muhammad movie

Double standards and dhimmi pandering exposed. Christians don’t kill people for being insulted, and Obama knows that. “WH Silent Over Demands to Denounce ‘P— Christ’ Artwork,” by Todd Starnes for Fox News, September 21:

Religious groups are blasting President Obama for not condemning am anti-Christian art display set to appear in New York City and one Republican lawmaker said he is “fed up with the administration’s double standard and religious hypocrisy.
“P— Christ,” once branded as a “deplorable, despicable display of vulgarity,” will be displayed at the Edward Tyler Nahem Gallery in Manhattan on Thursday. The artwork features a “photograph of the crucifix submerged in the artist’s urine.”

The artwork debuted in 1989 and was funded through prize money provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. The art gallery hosting the retrospective salute to Andres Serrano is privately owned.

Religious groups and some lawmakers have already started sounding off – and making comparisons to the controversy over a recent anti-Muslim film. The low budget movie “Innocence of Muslims” sparked violent and deadly clashes across the globe.

It also brought strong rebukes, condemnations and apologies from President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a host of administration officials.

The administration tried to have the film removed from YouTube – but Google rebuffed their request. The State Dept. spent $70,000 on a Pakistani television advertisement rebuking the film. And the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff personally telephoned a Christian minister in Florida to ask him to withdraw his support of the film.

Rep. Michael Grimm (R, C-NY) wants to know why President Obama hasn’t denounced the exhibit and said he’s fed up with what he called the administration’s “religious hypocrisy.”

“The Obama administration’s hypocrisy and utter lack of respect for the religious beliefs of Americans has reached an all-time high,” Grimm told Fox News. “I call on President Obama to stand up for America’s values and beliefs and denounce the ‘P— Christ’ that has offended Christians at home and abroad.”

So will the Obama Administration condemn the anti-Christian art display? Will they air a television ad denouncing the exhibit? Will the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ask the gallery to cancel the exhibit?

The White House did not return calls seeking comment. Neither did the Pentagon.

The State Dept. referred to a previous statement Clinton made in reference to the anti-Islamic film.

“America’s commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation,” Clinton said. “And as you know, we are home to people of all religions, many of whom came to this country seeking the right to exercise their own religion, including, of course, millions of Muslims. And we have the greatest respect for people of faith.”

Grimm said the lack of response from the White House is unacceptable.

“Perhaps they’ve forgotten the controversy that surrounds this deplorable piece depicting a crucifix submerged in the artist’s urine,” Grimm said. “It outraged Christians in American and throughout the world.”

Grimm, who is Catholic, said he found the artwork to be vulgar and offensive, “just as many in the Islamic world found ‘Innocence of Muslims’ to be highly offensive.”

“Like most Americans, I condemn both yet remain tolerant as the First Amendment demands,” he said. “Unfortunately, this administration has yet to echo these views in regards to the religiously offensive ‘art’ here at home.”…

Will someone stand up and please smash that thing ? What a blasphemy and disgrace ! Shame shame on us, and the Muslims go nuts over a movie while we sit back and let that happen !

  2. Jan B. says:

Dear hearts, my eyes are still sleepy, but am I reading that some of us plan to go to this attempt? I wouldn’t smash it, that would end up in sympathy for him, but instead prepare for the best media coverage we can get. That would mean 1. notifying the media of the protest. 2. preparing signs that give a clear message in spite of what the media reports, and then get the signs into all the footage when they run cameras [stand behind the people who are being interviewed]. That way the people can see a message no matter what bs the media is spouting. (I’m thinking of signs that say what Christ and Christianity have given to our country, and how it hurts us to attack it like this–or one like, ‘To dishonor Christ, the Son of God who died for us, is an injustice. Fight this injustice!’ and also signs that clearly give the name and contact info of the ‘artist’ and the contact info for the sponsor, and also signs that call for a boycott of this sponsor). 3. Get some good looking young people to go and put them up front. Make sure there’s a couple of minorities, and people in rather ethnic-y dress. Makes it harder for the media to mock. [Well, at our parish there's a lady who wears a Spanish kind of head scarf, like that. And surely you've got some cute kids, we do.] 4. Then do what they do to get things to ‘go viral.’ I don’t know what this is. 5. Put out a call ASAP with the contact info of sponsor and ask for letters and phone calls from around the country.

Oh thank you so much to anyone who responds and attends and fights!! I wish I could! May God bless you for standing up for his Son. Would that the Holy Father would grant an indulgence, a special new one, for people who defend our Faith against these attacks. But I personally wouldn’t call for violence of any kind. That’s not our style, is it, and humility will play better in Peoria–and Pakistan. I’m not ruling out that kind of response in principle, not without discussion, but we’re not presently prepared to do it well, are we? I could be wrong, I’m a woman. But for sure, I know from experience in protests, they’ll try to provoke violence, and encourage rash speech (to which I am myself inclined). Don’t fall for it without knowing what you’re about.

  3. Wulfrano Ruiz Sainz says:

And you still wonder what is going to happen to New York City because of this satanic blasphemy (among many others down through the years)? I’ll tell you what.

WWIII is coming. Worldwide destruction will be the outcome. In to restore “order” will be Satan himself and his protegé the Antichrist. Say you prayers every night. Those who survive will go insane or wish to be dead.
