Archbishop Rebukes Priest Who Assisted in Same Sex Marriage
A reader forwarded the following statement that was released on Friday, August 24 from the Archdiocese of Hartford in regard to the matter of Father Michael DeVito, a Diocesan priest in the Hartford Archdiocese, who assisted at a same sex marriage ceremony in New York City. I have been reluctant to post it before verifying that this is an official statement from the Archdiocese. I have just received confirmation from Maria Zone, Director of Communications of the Archdiocese of Hartford that this is an official statement.
Here it is:
Statement from the Archdiocese of Hartford regarding Fr. Michael DeVito
August 24, 2012:
Archbishop Henry J. Mansell has met with Father Michael DeVito regarding the priest’s participation in a same-sex marriage ceremony involving a cousin in New York City on August 19th.
According to Father DeVito, his participation in the ceremony was limited to doing a reading. He wore no vestments, but had worn his Roman collar.
Archbishop Mansell informed Father DeVito that his participation in this ceremony was understandably perceived by many Catholics as an implicit endorsement of same-sex marriage, which is contrary to Church teaching. As a consequence, and in accordance with canon law, the Archbishop formally rebuked Father DeVito and informed him that the rebuke would be a permanent part of his record.
Fr. DeVito said that he would not participate in any way in same-sex marriages in the future.
Personally, I don’t think this is enough. Father DeVito has broken his vows just with his presence at this ceremony. By being there, he has said that he believes in what is happening. “All” he did was a reading? That is still breaking his vows, unless his reading was along the lines of this:
“Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.” I Cor. 6:9-11.
Father DeVito’s cousin is in danger of eternity in hell fire. A Catholic priest should in no way lend his presence to such an abomination. A rebuke that is a permanent part of the record? No, I don’t think so. Father DeVito knew this was wrong. He should not have been there.
I, for one, am completely outraged. As I mentioned in my first posting, the Catholic church is in the midst of a war with our government. Right now it’s birth control, but same sex marriage is just over the horizon when it will be made the law of the land, and any church that refuses to participate will undoubtedly by persecuted by our own government, just as we are now persecuted with the HHS mandate. And actions by priests such as Father DeVito are only giving ammunition to those who are trying to destroy the Catholic Church.
We have been promised by our Founder that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church, But we are not promised a smooth and easy road. Father DeVito has just made it that much worse.
