[A party discipline vote AGAINST any such proposal would be better]
Irish lawmakers want ‘conscience vote’ on abortion
CWN – August 28, 2012
Members of Ireland’s Fine Gael party are asking the government to ensure that lawmakers would have a “conscience vote” on any proposal to change the country’s law on abortion.
Brian Hayes, a junior finance minister in the government led by Prime Minister Enda Kenny (who is Fine Gael leader), said that members of parliament from the Fine Gael and Labor parties should be allowed to vote freely on the matter, without the imposition of party discipline.
No proposal to change Ireland’s law banning abortion has yet been brought forward. But a government commission, due to report its findings in September, could recommend new legislation.
