Former Ratzinger students to discuss ecumenism at annual seminar this weekend

CWN – August 28, 2012

The annual meeting of the Ratzinger Schülerkreis–the seminar for former students of Pope Benedict XVI—will be devoted to ecumenism, with a particular focus on relations with Lutherans and Anglicans.

For 36 years the Holy Father has brought his former theology students together for an informal seminar each year. Since his papal election the sessions have been held at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. This year’s seminar will take place from August 30 to September 3. The discussions, as always, will be off the record.

Cardinal Kurt Koch, the president of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, will take part in the seminar. The guest speakers will include Evangelical Lutheran Bishop Ulrich Wilckens; Theodor Dieter, the director of the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg; and Bishop Charles Morerod of Lausanne, Switzerland.

One would think that the establishment of ordinariates for Anglicans and Lutherans was “Roma locuta est, causa finita est” on the issue of ecumenical relations with Anglicans and Lutherans.
