Cardinal Dolan lauds Paul Ryan as ‘great public servant’

CWN – August 21, 2012

Speaking on Sirius Catholic Channel radio, Cardinal Timothy Dolan lauded vice presidential contender Paul Ryan as a “great public servant.”

Recalling a Wisconsin Lutheran college commencement that both attended, Cardinal Dolan said that Ryan spoke for nine minutes on St. Thomas Aquinas. “It was tremendous, in front of a Lutheran audience,” the cardinal said. “So we really started up a great correspondence and got to know each other very, very well.”

“I came to know and admire him immensely,” Cardinal Dolan added. “And I would consider him a friend. He and his wife Janna and their three kids have been guests in my house; I’ve been a guest at their house. They’re remarkably upright, refreshing people. And he’s a great public servant.”

Stating he was “speaking personally and not from a partisan point of view” and “not trying to be an apologist” for Ryan, Cardinal Dolan praised Ryan’s “call for financial accountability and restraint and a balanced budget” as well as his “obvious solicitude for the poor.”

Noting that there may be differences in “prudential judgment” over how to assist the poor, Cardinal Dolan added that “I admire him. He’s honest. He’s refreshing. Do I agree with everything? No, but . . . I’m anxious to see him in action.”

To be “fair and balanced”, His Eminence has also spoken favorably (although critically) of Vice-President Biden–from this transcript of an interview with Bob Schieffer on April 8, 2012, on CBS’ Face the Nation ( www.cbsnews.com/8301-3460_162-57411039/face-the-nation-transcript-april-8-2012/?pageNum=4 ):

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well, there was certainly no duct tape on– on– on your [i.e., Cardinal Dolan's] mouth when the President came out and let it be known that his health care plan included Catholic institutions having to buy birth control pills for their employees at church– in churches and in schools and in hospitals. I want to ask you about that because I interviewed the vice president last week and he told me that it all had been resolved. Here– here is what he said.

JOE BIDEN: On the substance, the President ended up exactly where he intended, where he began. Which was that, one, every woman in America should be able to have insurance coverage for birth control if she so chooses and that the Catholic Church and other churches should not have to pay for it or provide it. That’s exactly where we are now.

BOB SCHIEFFER: For the record is that what you advised the President?

JOE BIDEN: Yes. But that’s also where the President was in the front end.

BOB SCHIEFFER: So I guess that question I’d ask you, Your Eminence, are you good with that?

TIMOTHY DOLAN: No, although I appreciate very much the Vice President. He has been helpful and I– I– I have benefitted from his counsel and I look forward to talking to him again [emphasis added]. So I am glad he weighed in on it but I would disagree with him. It hasn’t helped us much, Bob, because– because we still have to pay for it, because most of us are self-insured and we are still worried not just about our institutions but also the individuals. So we still find ourselves in a very tough spot, and we’re still going to continue to express what we believe is just not a religious point of view but a constitutional point of view that America’s at her best when the government doesn’t force a citizen or a group of citizens in a religious creed to violate their deepest held moral convictions.

[On another occasion His Eminence has spoken favorably and even-handedly of both V-P candidates in the same breath]

Is Dolan For Real? (He’s not really a “Catholic Cardinal”, is he?)

The following quote is from an article on National Review:

“Cardinal Dolan welcomed the fact that there is a Catholic on each party’s ticket. “Do you not think it’s a cause for celebration in the Catholic community in the United States of America that the two vice-presidential candidates are Catholic? Did you ever think it would come to this?

“We’ve got two men who — and you can disagree with one of them or both of them — say they take their faith seriously, who don’t try to hide it, and who say, ‘Hey, my Catholic upbringing and my Catholic formation influences the way I think.’ Not bad. Not bad.”

President John F. Kennedy, Dolan observed, “couldn’t say, ‘My religion will affect my public policy.’ He couldn’t say, ‘My Catholic faith is going to have an impact on the way I govern.’ In fact, he almost had to say the opposite. And now you’ve got two guys . . . who were picked because their Catholicism was attractive.”

Well, I guess Cardinal Dolan doesn’t know the difference between a Catholic and an Abortion loving, Contraceptive approving, Death panel advocate Vice President that has been used by this administration as the whipping boy for “Catholics”.

Come on, folks. Does Dolan really think there are two Catholics in this Political fracas? Ryan is the only one who is Catholic. And as soon as Dolan glad hands Obama as he did Cuomo he becomes a shill for the Obama Campaign…no matter what he says or how he acts. They want this Al Smith Dinner to lend legitimacy to the Obama Campaign once again. And once again, Dolan is their boy. But to this quote from him…my God man…WAKE UP!!!
