Petition drive urges vigorous preaching of Humanae Vitae
CWN – July 27, 2012
A lay Catholic group has organized a nationwide petition drive, encouraging American bishops to promote forthright teaching on the Church’s stand regarding contraception.
The Bellarmine Forum [formerly The Wanderer Forum] hopes to collect 1 million signatures on its petition, which expresses gratitude for the teaching contained most notably in Humanae Vitae, and promises support for the bishops in “their efforts to preach and to defend this vital teaching of the Magisterium.”
Explaining the need for the campaign in a Crisis magazine essay, Charles Rice of Notre Dame Law School observes that while the US bishops have mounted a strong campaign against the HHS contraceptive mandate, the American public–and most American Catholics–still need to understand why Catholics oppose the funding of contraceptives. That message requires a clear explanation of why contraception is gravely immoral.
