Scotland: gay activists protest Church campaign to protect marriage
CWN – July 09, 2012
Gay activists in Scotland are raising pre-emptive protests about reports that the Catholic Church will mount an organized campaign to oppose legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
The Scottish hierarchy is planning a “Support Marriage Sunday,” a day on which parishioners will be encouraged to defend the existing definition of marriage. Cardinal Keith O’Brien said: “We will use this opportunity to remind Catholics of the importance of marriage as a union of a man and a woman and to urge them to be generous in contributing to a special collection which will be used to support initiatives in defense of marriage.”
Homosexual activists charged that the Church hierarchy has effectively declared “war on same-sex marriage,” and insisted that the majority of Scots would approve a new definition of marriage.
