Catholic-Jewish dialogue explores Jewish New Testament commentary; YouCat revision discussed

CWN – July 09, 2012

Representatives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and National Council of Synagogues met recently to discuss Amy Jill Levine and Mark Zvi Brettler’s Jewish Annotated New Testament.

“The publication of Levine’s and Brettler’s comprehensive work on the New Testament represents an important milestone in Catholic-Jewish relations,” said Auxiliary Bishop Denis Madden of Baltimore, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. “Never before has a group of Jewish scholars made so learned and technical a reading of the New Testament. Clearly, this new effort reflects the progress we have made since the Second Vatican Council in mutual respect for each other’s sacred Scriptures.”

In addition, the USCCB, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, and Rabbinical Council of America met recently to discuss a just economy, religious school funding, the HHS mandate, and other topics. According to a USCCB press release on the meeting, the youth catechism YouCat is undergoing a revision:

Bishop [William] Murphy gave a brief report on the new Catholic Catechism for Youth titled YouCat. Of specific interest to the group were sections dealing with Jewish people. Some concerns had previously been voiced surrounding the formulation of some parts of the text, initiating a revision.

  1. Michael Wilson says:

Wonderful! The blasphemies against Our Lord, His Divine nature, and His salvific mission will be published, with the aid of “Catholic” bishops. Indeed a new milestone has been reached, but one of ignominy.

  2. Wulfrano Ruiz Sainz says:

The intention is obvious. Downgrade Our Lord to being merely human. May those jewish blasphemers go to you know where.
